Qobuz: Music & Editorial App Comments & Reviews

Qobuz: Music & Editorial Positive Reviews

Great music, less buggy since updatesEdit: I wrote the below review and then the buffering-type issue seems to have stopped, I’m guessing they’ve updated it. So I’ve upgraded this review from 3 to 5 stars. Overall I am very pleased and recommend this app to music lovers. My tastes are extreme wide and I the music selection is everything I need. I would like the ability to create my own stations but apparently that’s not the philosophy of this app. The music quality is noticeably better than Apple Music Lossless and the music discovery and curation is excellent for knowledgeable music lovers who want to expand their horizons (far better than Apple Music). For example I get introduced to jazz and classical that don’t bore me to death with their self importance, and don’t get spoon fed faddish indie junk. But it routinely decides to not play songs, and often times will never play them again even if I restart my phone, as if the error is cached in memory. There’s no apparent reason for it, my phone, connection and storage are fine. This really isn’t acceptable considering these often are my favorite songs, clicked off quickly while sitting at a red light or when I need a boost at work. I don’t need the frustration and don’t think I’ll keep this once the trial expires unless someone can help me fix the issue..Version: 6.8.2

DRM-Free High Resolution MusicSome streaming apps require a subscription to rent access to their music catalog. Other high res music sites give you one-time access to high res downloads. Qobuz has a subscription tier for those who want access to the entire catalog, but it also sells DRM-free music that you can access anywhere, any time — on your phone, iPad, computer, you name it. And you can re-download your music in case your files are misplaced. I have found Qobuz to be hands down the best place to legally purchase high resolution music. The price point is higher than non-high-res sites like the iTunes Music Store, but you’re paying for the added benefit of lossless/high res. Only drawback as of now is that there is no support (yet) for Dolby Atmos or other Spatial Audio technology, likely because those are proprietary formats and are therefore not DRM-free. (And Spatial Audio is not lossless or high res either. Yet.).Version: 7.8.0

App needs workStarted my trial to see if I like Qobuz better than Tidal. I noticed Qobuz has more of certain masters than tidal, but it’s also missing stuff that tidal does have. I’m satisfied with the quality and selection but the app needs a lot of work. Playback gives errors more often than Im okay with, and I don’t like how the player disappears completely when you’re in the search menu. You have to go all the way back to get back to the player which is super inconvenient. In my opinion, album titles should be moved to the top and featured artist should be next to the artist name. I don’t like how there’s no exact release dates for anything, just the year it came out. The discover tab needs a whole revamp, it’s super hard to find new music for me and nothing is relevant. If there’s a new music Friday tab like every other app someone please tell me. If not that’s something people are used to with other services so that’s a must for me. Swiping though songs in the player would be really nice. There’s loading symbols for basically everything you press, even just favoriting a song. The app needs an overhaul. Other than that it’s a good service but because of the app alone I won’t be choosing this over tidal just yet.Version: 5.9.0

Awesome sound! It’s a huge breath of fresh air after listening to Apple Music’s low quality codec and Spotify’s crushed tracks for so long. I nearly forgot that music is supposed to sound good. I got so frustrated that Apple makes it impossible to actually listen to the lossless format without buying a bunch of external workarounds, but luckily that frustration led me here. Sound is awesome and app is inviting enough to work with. I hope they get more classical/traditional music from around the world and have it indexed properly by people who are familiar with artists/rep/titles within the respective traditions—or better yet curated playlists the same way they have it for indie, jazz, etc. There seems to be some opportunity for growth there, but I’m relatively new to the app so some of the issue just may be my fluidity within it, though there isn’t almost any of the quintessential recordings of the 20th century masters of shakuhachi honkyoku, a very developed flute tradition in Japan with centuries of refinement, for example..Version: 7.3.4

5 star service, 3 star applicationI absolutely adore Qobuz. I have tried every single hifi music streaming competitor, and Qobuz is leaps and bounds ahead, for two reasons: transparency and range. No snake oil MQA here, it is very clear what music is available in what quality. Of course, as it is a higher quality music streaming service, it does not have the sheer discography of non-hifi streaming services, nor do I expect it to. Now, the application. Its okay. Nothing special, it works fine, except for one fatal flaw. Downloads. If I want to download all the tracks in my library, I have to click them one, by one, by one, hitting the three dots then hitting download then selecting quality. A “download all tracks” feature would instantly jump this app to 4 and a half stars. For 5 stars, I would like to see a better shuffle system. The issue right now is that when you press shuffle tracks after playing something from your liked tracks, it only shuffles what you have added recently. I suspect this is because older tracks are not loaded in. By contrast, shuffling downloaded tracks seems to shuffle everything you have downloaded (hence the need for a download all liked tracks option). To rehash, this is a stellar service, with an almost as good app that is being brought low by a few glaring flaws. Regardless, I recommend it to anyone who has the equipment to enjoy high fidelity music..Version: 6.6.0

Great app, great quality, needs a few buttons!I’m a new Qobuz user and I’m excited about it! Quick question... let’s say I want to hit random on all the music that I like... is there a way to do that? First I tried downloading MP3s (as 44.1 files would take up space in a hurry) to my phone, but then I realized that I lost the option to stream those songs at CD quality. Then I tried favoriting albums, but if I’m trying to have all the tracks together in one place... it looks like I’d have to individually favorite each song, and even then there’s not a random button on the favorite songs list. Then I tried making a playlist of everything but it Looks like there’s a cap on how many songs are in a playlist. I believe the easiest solutions to be as follows: 1a. Make it so when someone favorites an album, all the tracks show up in the favorite tracks list b. Allow random play on favorite tracks Or, 2. Have a shuffle button in the favorite albums list that includes all songs from all albums. Or, 3. Have the ability to prefer CD quality when streaming even if I’ve downloaded MP3s of the same songs.... this would be a wonderful feature to have anyway! Or, 4. Have unlimited length playlists Thanks! Tom.Version: 5.13.0

Best AppThis app is probably the best I’ve ever had. I spend hours on it every day just adding more and more songs. Nothing could be better. No ads. Unlimited skips! What’s not to like? Just one small little thing. They don’t always have the main song of what your looking for. For instance, I was looking for Zankyou Sanka and they didn’t have the main version; only more different ones that were made by viewers. This doesn’t bother me too much and not enough for me to quit using this app but if they could fix these small things I bet they would have to add a whole sixth star just for this app. All in all this app is amazing and I really think you should think about getting it..Version: 7.2.0

Problems initially but now loving it.Having nothing but problems with app. Music shutting off in the middle of play back and signed up for sublime subscription but can only play back at cd quality despite using external fiio q5 dac/amp and iPhone XS Max with lastest iOS. Great idea if they can get things working. No phone number for support and still no email response for support after 24hrs so far. Update on this. Finally got email back and not very helpful indicating that since bought subscription from App Store need to talk to them. No help there directed me back. Eventually figured out App Store subscription for 25$ is only hifi or cd quality streaming while 25$ sublime from Qobuz on their website allows you to stream all music at highest resolution through app. Not sure why that is. Now working as advertised and I’m loving it so I’m upping my star rating..Version: 5.2.2

Human, finallyI want to praise Qobuz to the skies. The human touch is significant and brings back for me the excitement and curiosity I first had when I began exploring classical music as a teenager. It’s amazing to me that it isn’t the 24-bit audio that makes Qobuz great. They don’t rely on just that to appeal to audiophiles, like everyone else does. They include liner notes (as NO ONE else does). They write about the music (e.g., the editorial panoramas). This turns the music into a cultural experience, people sharing with people what they love and why. And the clean interface of the app only enhances the human touch while being clutter-free. I’m currently in a trial subscription, but already I am sold. Thank you, Qobuz, for all you do above and beyond the 24-bit audio. Please keep doing it..Version: 5.6.0.1

ErrorI wish that the message saying that “an error has occurred, please try again later” wouldn’t show up every time that I try to delete my account and I could just delete my accounts without any errors happening. I also wish that the email saying to confirm your account deletion would immediately show up in your inbox without having to wait at all when you click the button to forever delete your account. Also it would be easier and less time consuming to delete your account if you could just delete it without having to get a confirmation email to do so. I do love this app a lot though..Version: 7.6.1

Fantastic Sound Strangled by a Poor AppI have tried three times to use Qobuz as my single source of music. Limited library aside, I dove in and downloaded all my favorites. That’s where it started. Slow downloads and when the iPhone auto locks your download stops. No background refresh. Listening is fantastic. And the music quality is well identified. (Unlike other services.) BUT, if the app begins to skip tracks you have to empty the cache. Who else has a cache? And it does seem it’s not Carplay ready. I hardwire to the car to get the highest sound res. If I re-enter the car and start Carplay the app is blank and I have to reconnect the iPhone. It takes a lot of hand holding to use this app. Maybe only listen to Qobuz at home. Again great sound and could listen to it all day but not on the iOS app..Version: 7.3.4

Great sound, buggy appHas the best sound quality out of all the services I’ve tried. However, the app is buggy. The favorites section only shows 300 items for each favorites section (releases, tracks, and artists). For some reason this 300 limit makes it impossible to search all of your favorites. If what you search for isn’t in the initial 300, it will not appear. In order to display all favorites, you have to scroll to the bottom of the list so it refreshes and displays more items. You have to repeat this until all your favorites are displayed. Once done you can then search all of your favorites. This issue needs to be looked into. I don’t what to have to do this each time I want to search my favorites. Other then that, the app is fine for me..Version: 7.2.0

Sound quality, finally. The interface on both mobile and desktop has some kinks to work out but none of thrm actually detract from the service. I subscribed for completely lossless sound quality (coming from TIDAL, which I discovered to be a scam re: MQA). This service has provided me exactly what Inwas looking for. My only actual grievance here is that the music selection is somewhat limited—very underground or niche artists may not be available. But that will be remedied as the service grows. 5 stars for sound quality alone and the ability to actually buy albums for permanent storage on laptop and mobile..Version: 5.20.0

Really AmazingI’ve been listening to Pandora for years, and got tired of it playing the same tunes over and over even though I tried to go deep with the content. I am now in a position to afford streaming services, and signing up for Qobuz has changed my listening enjoyment for the better. The fact that I can find almost anything I might like to listen to at any given time is just amazing. The sound quality seems to be superior to anything I’ve listened to before. If you’re on the fence, and I don’t know why you would be, just try it, and you’ll get hooked..Version: 6.6.0

Favorites shuffle, please...I enjoy the service, however I have a problem with the app. I try to use it at work, but I don’t have time to continually mess with it, and change songs. My favorites are clearly listed, and I have the option of listening to them alphabetically by song, artist, or album. That’s a terrible way to have music playing in my office all day. I would like to see a shuffle all favorites selection that will randomly select from every song/album that I have favorited. Every other service does this. At home I have Roon software, which integrates beautifully with Qobuz, and mixes my locally stored music with Qobuz favorites seamlessly. It’s a perfect setup for me. Unless I am watching tv or a movie, there is never a time when music isn’t playing..Version: 5.12.0

Wanting to commit to the switchI absolutely love the set up of Qobuz app. I love that it tells you what you’re streaming quality is instead of just saying “Hi fi”. Interface is sleek and easy. My only complaint is that I am a metal fan and it only has 1 Infected Rain album, & missing a few other favorite groups such as Tetrarch. Even my pop mix I’ve had for a few years is missing 3 or 4 songs which makes me sad. So not sure if I want to be without these few favorites. Other wise I highly recommend Qobuz for music lovers. It really sounds amazing and sits right next to Tidal (but at a lower cost).Version: 5.16.0

So close to perfect but needs polishGreat quality, promotes more obscure artists all over the spectrum. Great playlists. In my time on this app I’ve discovered so much music. Good integration with devices. It has reviews of albums and really try to provide content for music lovers of all genres. But, it has Slow load and buffer times if you don’t have a perfect WiFi connection. Whenever you “heart” something, it has to take entire seconds just for that action. I see that loading symbol so much just trying to do basic tasks. A lot of the time it has difficulty loading artists profiles. Even when using cd quality with 4g data. where as I don’t have this either problems with tidal HIFI or deezer HIFI when I’m out and about. In my opinion, the app feels a bit clunky. The UI design just looks like a base model iOS app. Where I wish it felt more professional or at least some “personality”. I really want to make it my main service. But those issues just sorta turn me towards tidal. (Also if you added a student discount that would help more people switch.).Version: 5.16.0

By far the best music streaming appAccess to high resolution audio that just makes the competition look silly (and sound awful). This app is akin to the local record shop. The music featured is curated by people who truly love music; this is a music lover’s music app. On rare occasion, something is missing, but it is rare. Qobuz excels with great features on artists (often with hyperlinks to influences and peers). Qobuz even has a dedicated corner to audiophile equipment for those interested. Fortunately for Qobuz, the competition obviously doesn’t care as much about the consumer experience..Version: 5.20.0

Great music quality with bugs and missing featuresWonderful to have music at this high quality. Selection is good. Lately the app is very slow to respond. Very, very slow. Especially when you try to bring up the offline library. Also there’s a major feature missing that others have mentioned: when you select an album as a favorite, you want the songs in that album to show up as favorite tracks, so that you can shuffle through all the tracks from albums you’ve favorited. That can’t happen. Seems like an easy fix but it doesn’t seem to have been implemented yet. P. S. I am surprised that when people submit feedback here, the developer response asks you to go submit it somewhere else. It would be a lot easier for Qobuz to copy and paste these comments for their own use, assuming they’d want to improve their app to retain users, than to require every single person to go elsewhere to submit the feature request, especially when you can’t copy/paste the URL they indicate..Version: 5.20.0

Running me in circlesI downloaded the app and subscribed to the free trial, which required automatically enrolling after trial period. The app is running me in circles, will only play sample tracks in MP3 format. When I follow link to upgrade it tells me I am already subscribed and logged in. Emailed support and have not heard back so will hope to have access and will repost my review at that time. You would think the developer would have made sure the download, trial offer and subscription enrollment would work seamlessly but based on my experience it was somehow missed!.Version: 5.3.4

Sounds better than tidalI have done a few comparisons on my headphones and on my iPhone speakers, and I could tell you that it does sound better than streaming from TIDAL. The interface is not as good as other services but the sound quality is noticeably better. It’s so much better that I need to change, or turn off my EQ settings that I normally have with other programs. This service is even better if you have really good audio equipment, as you really will hear the difference. It’s like upgrading your DAC to a $5000 piece of equipment.Version: 5.3.4

What a discovery! As a longtime (old) audio hobbyist, I didn’t think of my Apple 6S as high end gear, but the trial hi-rez Qobuz subscription just blew my socks off with really good sound. Whether using apple earbuds or my Etymotics, or even using the iphone as a streaming dac into my preamp, the quality of sound and the enormous music catalog has profoundly changed my listening experience. I’m now seriously considering leaving behind physical media (of which I have many, many full shelves), scoring a higher-end streamer/dac and moving my listening chair to a nice, comfy spot in cyberspace. Jeff.Version: 5.4.0

Kudos to QobuzSo happy with Qobuz as my new streaming service. The best sound quality to my ears, cleaner than tidal for many tracks I compared between them. The catalogue for classical and jazz is superb, and the meta data and listings for classical works is much better than the rest. The apps have improved greatly since I first took a look, and now stand near the top tier. The searching now surpasses tidal as well, especially within one’s own collection. I hope they continue to actively develop the CarPlay app. Merci!.Version: 5.5.0

AmazingI do not write reviews for apps but I had to for this app and the company. Besides the outstanding quality and choice I don’t think I have had a music app in which the auto play feature gave such amazing related songs, most all for music I did not know about. It really has expanded my listening bubble tremendously is the week or so I’ve had it now. Thank you to all of the awesome people that have worked and continue to work to bring this to us..Version: 6.5.1

Move over Apple MusicI really have considered myself pretty well-versed in the music department. I had no idea what I was missing I have been an Apple Music member for longer than I want to think about. I did not know what I was missing, quite literally so. I really didn’t. the sound quality blows my hair back! The app with music suggestionsAnd the interactive platform itself is so user-friendly and so smart. So I can’t say enough about it obviously 5+ stars..Version: 6.4.1

Love the high-res (not so much the app itself)First, having the app play high-res music is fantastic. And I love the Qobuz catalog, playlists and recommendations. Second, I find the app somewhat unreliable, but especially with CarPlay (iPhone X on a Volvo plugged in via USB) The app behaves oddly often. Sometimes on the car I have to pull over just to restart the thing. Other times (not while driving) I cannot get to the “currently playing” screen, so I have to restart the app as well. Other times I am not able to play a song when in fact it was working well the first time (deleting the song and downloading it again works). I still recommend Qobuz if you like high-res, but don’t expect the same reliability or user experience as other apps you might be used to. One thing I’d love to see is a confirmation of the audio quality I am actually listening to (as opposed to only the availability of a recording in high-res vs cd quality)..Version: 6.4.1

Better than some others, but still needs workThe app is definitely better than some other apps out there. One that comes to mind is tidal. I just love the value! After using a few apps, I have the following gripes: 1. The import (download) feature needs to add the option to download all liked songs. For now I have to push all of my favorites into a playlist and then download. 2. Large playlists are truncated with a button to view more. Just switch to lazyloading or endless scrolling. 3. Longer playlists revert to the shortened view when you select a track and then back out back to the playlist view. This makes you lose your spot in the playlist. Very frustrating. 4. Unlike Tidal, you don't know what quality a song is until you select it. Please add this data in the list view. 5. When playing a song, only the sample rate is present. Please add the bitrate and resolution..Version: 6.4.2

ReviewI’ve been a cd person since the mid 90’s, and it was hard for me to grasp the advent of listening to music from any other medium. But now that I’ve purchased a streamer a few weeks ago, and became an annual subscriber to Qobuz…wow! The sound quality is equal to or better than the original cd. The playlists that you guys create are mind blowing, as well the new hi-res updates are incredibly awesome. Outstanding, please keep up the high-quality work!.Version: 7.5.0

Almost perfectI subscribed because reviews said it was the best streaming service for classical music. It has lived up to the reviews. My only issue is that my account seems to be registered in France even though I chose United States English as my interface language when I subscribed online in the United States. There are still a number of albums with descriptions only in French, and the Magazine in the app is in French (my emailed magazine is in English). If I could change these to American English, I would give Qobuz a 5..Version: 7.6.0

Great sound quality, bad appSearch function is absolutely horrible. Playlists should show in their entirety when you return to them, but you always have to scroll all the way back down, click “show more” then scroll some more. Service hangs often, and often is unable to stream tracks for no reason (error), which bombs your playlist and makes you have to start it over and then get replays. So many problems and still none fixed after almost a year, it’s like no one ever tests this thing..Version: 6.3.0

Quality’s Great, Questionable AppsI’ve tried a few lossless/ hifi streaming services and this sounds the best out of any of them. With that said, the apps Qobuz operates are absolutely awful. The UI isn’t great, but it isn’t unusable. Love that it even has a CarPlay app. But it will CONSTANTLY switch from what I’m playing(it won’t hit the end of an artist/ album/ etc) to some awful random music from the collection it constantly pushes. I cannot figure out for the life of me why it does this, will do it listening to an artist page, album, my own likes, etc..Version: 6.7.0

QuintessentialIf you are an audiophile Qobuz should be one of you go to apps. Fits nicely with Roon If you don’t even know what an audiophile is your in the right place, in good hands. If you just love music, all kinds of music than you need Qobuz, you want Qobuz ! Did you give all you cherished albums away? CD’s are in boxes and you sold or gave away your CD player? Don’t worry Qobuz has your back. Listen to all your favorite songs, reminisce your past music journey with ease. Now that your back in the groove, Qobuz helps you discover new current music that fits your style and tastes. Try it. You’ll discover your music all over again and then your on the road to music enjoyment like it was always meant to be. Try it. You’ve got nothing to loose and everything to gain..Version: 6.8.2

Offline library issueQobuz is an excellent service. Not sure when this changed on iOS but, when trying to choose from my offline library, I need to select the album within a second or it is replaced the big list of everything from the band. I really would like to just focus on the albums I have downloaded to my phone sometimes..Version: 7.2.0

BuggyBuggy, and updates never fix things. (Running current version of iOS on a current device.) If you do anything else on your device while listening, the app flips out: stops streaming the track, shuffles songs, displays a red error message, and/or crashes altogether. Search never improves, it's always been slow, with many dead ends. But sound is superb, and no one beats them at audio quality, so - I'll stick with it..Version: 6.4.1

Great experience listening to high quality musicI can’t put my finger on any one thing that makes this great. But for some reason I keep opening this rather than my other music apps. I like how it focuses on albums because I appreciate how artists arrange songs ins an album. It does a great job curating music that I like. The interface is friendly and not muddied up with features I don’t care about..Version: 6.7.1

Two words: Playlist ManagementI like the sound quality on the songs that are actually available, but playlist management is a nightmare. Scrolling through playlists causes the app to lag and freeze, and if I start one playlist and want to switch to another one, I have to completely shut down and restart the app, sometimes multiple times. In summary, it needs a much larger selection and a substantially better playlist management experience to be worth the price..Version: 7.0.0

Best quality and musical culture. Beautiful on iPadQobuz offers the best quality audio I’ve found on streaming services, and the only that allows you to combine your hi-res streaming library with purchases. The experience on the mobile app is not as strong as with other streaming services, with pages often slow to load, but it’s the best on Mac and iPad. It looks astonishingly beautiful on iPad. If I could ask for one feature, I would ask for Siri support so that I can ask Siri to play Qobuz while I’m driving..Version: 5.16.0
