Due to oral cancer treatments, I lost my ability to speak clearly. As a teacher, this has significantly disrupted my ability to speak to students and colleagues one on one. This app has been a huge help with communication professionally. It has also been extremely helpful with my frequent doctor and hospital visits and interpersonal communication in general. In fact, I had a doctor ask for the name of the app as he was impressed with its functionality and versatility. This app has been extremely helpful in many aspects of my life! My thumbs have gotten so fast with typing that I rival my three teenage daughter’s texting abilities! 😜. Although still slower than normal speaking conversation, it is faster and less cumbersome than writing messages out by hand. Thanks for developing this great app!
Love the app. I am non verbal so this app has become my voice. Love that I can save so many phrases and it is easy to learn. Do wish the setting to use only the iPhone/iPad speaker was easier to turn on. I need to go into settings, “speech, recordings and sounds” and scroll down to “always use built in speakers” to change every time I want to use to answer the phone and then back thru settings to set back to hear thru a speaker. Takes too long to keep changing. Should be one button on the main screen to do this. I also wish the auto correct was better. I seem to make many more errors on this app than I do on text, email or word documents. The app “guesses” are wildly wrong and often times non sensical. Like if I use the app at the drug store to get Percocet, the app corrects to “petticoat.” Also, it mispronounces certain words like invalid - meaning disabled - not in val id - meaning not valid. (Which ironically is how I often feel as a disabled person!)
Due to my ALS, I’ve been having issues speaking over the phone and/or people understanding me in person due my struggles with word pronunciation and the decline in my ability to speak due to ALS. This app is a great tool that allows me to communicate better over the phone & in person. Having the ability to text and the app speak for me, is a huge benefit! With the pre-programed phrases, words, and the ability to easily customize…I no longer need someone to accompany me on phone calls, or when going to the pharmacy, bank, store, or even just socializing with friends and family. I’m now able to communicate on my own with the assistance of this app on my smartphone. A big THANK YOU goes out to the developers of this app!!
I am so grateful for and delighted by Speech Assistant! I have been using it for years, and it is reliable, never seems to break, and gets better and better over time. The developers are responsive, and do a fantastic job of listening to the aac-using community and adding desired features. While I am a regular aac-user, this week my spouse had laryngitis. She already had this app on her phone because I had set it up, and so she was ready to go, and able to continue on with all her communication needs without interruption. Everyone should have this app on their phone, for those times when vocalizing is not a good option.
Thank you so much for creating Speech Assistant! Finding this app--that wonderously works across my iPhone, iPad, and Mac--changed my life when I lost my voice box. This affordable and dynamic tool enabled me to be heard in the various languages I speak. I'm sure it can do much more than I have used in these two years. It is far better than any other app I could find, including those recommended by the speech therapy community. My only critique is not being able to access the full functionality. It seems to record sessions but I can't make it work. (As a writer and educator this feature could be invaluable; I still teach online.) And this latest update seems to have disabled my ability to use the return key to send/speak. Would love to find support on this...

What an excellent app. I’ve been using it since 2021 and it’s really helped me communicate in person, and online while also have the ability to easily connect to my phone, opening up my world. I can easily customize my in person conversations for most every situation. I use it on my phone and pad and can sync them so I’m always on the same page in my communication. The manual is easy to follow and best yet is the developers help line. I’ve had a few issues, mostly my fault, and they’ve resolved them quickly and to all our satisfaction, they’re constantly working to improve the app. Thanks you for this…
I have vocal cord and airway spasms along with asthma and COPD. Conversation is very tedious for me when I go to medical apts. everyone wants the same thing, name, DOB, insurance number, permission to talk to my husband, etc. This app is a game changer. Not only does it really to all questions but when I use it, the chatty people no longer expect me to converse with them. It great for robo calls as well. Using this app to answer "hello" means if it's an AI voice, they think I'm an answering machine so they hang up. And if it's a person I want to talk to, I can. I can't praise this app enough. What a relief to be able to communicate again.
I have Parkinson”s and my speech is becoming more and more negatively affected as it progresses. I have been trying out many AAC apps over the last few months to help me “speak”, and so far SA is more versatile and has by far the most customizable settings of any other IOS apps I’ve tested. The only thing that would make it even better is having the additional feature that is included on a PC app I also use that gives the user the ability to draw within the app and have the written words optionally converted to text.
I am occasionally nonverbal due to being autistic; I love that I can customize this as needed, and add lots of words or phrases specific to my line of work. I recommended to a friend of mine; that for a kid we can start with pictures, add words as they grow older, then add more complex sentences even later on. Thank you! I recommend adding a shortcut to the Control Panel, so we can quickly get to it from another app, rather than have to access only from the Home Screen.
This app has been a huge help to me after I permanently lost my ability to speak in January. It is very user friendly and easy to personalize. I really like the feature where the text can be shown in large print. I had used a similar app that allowed me to use my own pre-recorded voice, but I ended up coming back to Speech Assistant AAC due to its ease of use. This is the best app I have ever used! It has truly been a blessing.
The only issue I have is that when switching tabs for different conversations, the categories don’t stay on the conversation. If you change the tab from one and start a new conversation using a different category, then switch back to the other conversation, the categories are still on the previous conversation. So you have to keep changing them. It would be great to have the categories change with the conversations tabs.
I really like SpeechAssistant, as a part time AAC user! I’m also visually impaired so the customization of this app is extremely helpful. One thing is that I wish is that this app could control an AI device (eg. Echo, Echo Dot, or Google products). I’ve tried and the speech has to be slowed down a little bit for my Echo Dot to pick it up. I also wish this app had more symbols to it, for example, things like “stop”, “no”, “yes”, “I like/I don’t like” and so on. I just wish this had more symbols for basic words like described above.
What a wonderful surprise. I have used five or six different apps on my iPhone and iPad to help with speech (I have ALS and use a ventilator mask more than 23 hours a day) and this is the best one. Speech Assistant comes with dozens of phrases built in, also in various categories, so it is easy to use immediately. But it can be customized, too. And, get this-- you can add your own voice to phrases, words, sentences. Now it works on M1 Macs, too. Wonderful.
Speech Assistant is so easy to use and customize. Love that there are diff voices and with the ability to change voice pitch and speech rate. It’s very intuitive and my 85-year old patient, who hates “technology,” was able to use it easily after a 5-min demo! Thank you to the developer for this clean, functional, flexible, and intuitive program...and it is extremely affordable. I’m so grateful to be able to recommend such a fine App to my patients!
I tried every free AAC app and most of the paid ones and this is heads and shoulders the best one I’ve used. Forget using a Voice Keeper voice though, so buggy I gave up. The good news is Eleven Labs AI voice clones sound much better and work perfectly with this wonderful app. If you need AAC on iOS this is the best $25 you can possibly spend. Great dev support as well! Thank you Ton!
I am a speech pathologist, and I want to thank the developer for creating this app. I recommend this app to all of my speech/language impaired patients who require AAC. It is simple and easy to use and the price doesn’t break the bank (many of my patients live on a fixed income). Thank you for restoring communication for many people with communication disorders.
I’ve already written a review before about this app, but there were some features that i thought i would suggest… firstly, there’s an issue where, when you make a category, a button is already made for you and you can’t delete it. it leaves my boards looking messy and it bugs me. secondly, i think the ability to move sub-categories around the same way you can move buttons around would be great. it would be nice to move sub-categories around in the same spots buttons can move if that makes sense. no further comments there. thirdly, a small suggestion that i think would make a great difference for some people; a feature to toggle the ability for the app to read the names of the categories and sub-categories you’re clicking on as you click on tnem the same way buttons read out when you click on them. fourthly, recordded or imported audio on buttons doesn’t play on phone calls! please fix this… and finally, i think there should be sub-sub-categories. a lot of aac apps have so many layers of sub-categories you can do and i think adding more sub-categories options would be great :) thank you for your time!
I use this for an aphasic client. Extremely easy to program with novel “carrier” phrase/question-forms for repetitive practice. I wonder if there is a way (I may have missed) to make the pictures I’ve programmed onto the text buttons appear in the larger read-out text windows. That would make the stimulus selections more salient and appealing. Otherwise, the application is terrific, very reasonably priced, and always useful.
Worth every penny! I lost my speech due to ALS, and this is by far my favorite app for speech. It’s great for saving custom phrases , works like a dream on iPhone and iPad, and is fabulous for phone calls! I use it for all my work meetings by dialing in with my cell phone and it seamlessly speaks for me. Everyone I’ve used it with so far absolutely loves it as much as I do. Its been a lifesaver for my career!
I praise this app and the developer who made but this one surpasses them. I have a rare disease called Kearns Sayre Syndrome. My speech is really complicated and compressed more now verbally. I used this app for everyday living. Make sure you buy the whole version and upgrade to pro to unlock all its features it has to offer.
I have ALS, and have lost my ability to speak. This app offers so many options that have made my life much easier. I can now talk on my phone using the app and it works great! I love how I can save my thoughts and share them with others later. I definitely recommend it.
I love this aac app so much. I have been using it for almost 3 years now. I’ve been customizing it that entire time as well. The only thing I wish was that I could upload png to the buttons for the icons. They always come out with a white or black background
I love this app. It has really helped me communicate with everyone. I am very happy that it has a way to make the text larger as I am visually impaired. The one thing I would really like if it was added was if each of the buttons could be customized with a color so I could find the button I want faster. Overall Great app!
This app is so helpful for me! I deal with chronic jaw and back pain and I use it when I am in too much pain to talk or type. The layout is very easy to understand and I like that responses can be pre-programmed or pre-recorded, which allows me to feel like I’m “talking” with my own voice.
This is a great app and really easy to use! The only thing that would make it better is if the user could also hear the audio output during phone calls. It’s strange to not be able to hear your own side of the conversation during a phone call.
I work for a nonprofit that supports people with ALS,and I help with communication support. I have recommended this app to hundreds. It's intuitive and feature rich. And I'm constantly delighted with new functionality, clearly incorporating user feedback. THANK YOU!!
Having Bulbar ALS. This is extremely helpful. When using over the phone, the other party should be apprised that you are using this aid I’ve been very satisfied Why doesn’t it display as a purchased app in App Store?
Having lost my ability to speak, this app has saved my personal and professional lives!! I couldn’t be more grateful!! Highly recommend!!
This wonderful tool has provided me, someone who doesn’t have a voice, with a way to easily communicate with others. It’s perfect for my needs. Highly recommended.
I have tried so many apps since losing my voice, but this app has allowed me to have my words heard over the phone, in meetings, and even in zoom calls. I love it💗
I love this app! It works so well for me. I have Parkinson’s and it’s really messed with my speech. I also live with people who are hard of hearing. This app is easy to access and use. It helps me to get my message out.
Literally a lifesaver for someone with ALS. Can now communicate with medics, doctors, nurses, family and strangers during emergencies. App is easy to use. Offers options for customization. Highly recommend!
I’ve been using the app for a few years and it’s super helpful but I can’t find an easy way to get help. E.g. I want to upload my voice clone from eleven labs. I found the instructions but I’m not finding this easy
This app is perfect for my severely autistic teenage son. The flexibility is great. It never crashes. In my previous review I suggested a simple lock on the app configuration, so my son cannot change the settings. To my very pleasant surprise, the developer quickly added this feature. This is a very useful, flexible, and stable app. I just discovered the newly enhanced options for back up and synchronization of multiple devices. I love it.
You cant send the voice message to whatsapp, i have linked my elevenlabs api , there should be button on main menu that let you send the text to speech to WhatsApp chat
This app is great for my needs without breaking the bank. It has a bunch of great features that increase readability and function. It wasn't even hard to learn! I love this app.
Incredible app that honestly is worth hundreds and for 25 bucks they gave us and my son a amazing tool. It works so well on the Apple Watch
This app is fabulous for those with ALS. It’s tremendously simple to learn how to use, create new phrases, location of functionality. The ONLY thing that is missing a iPhone version.
Great! MND, ALS, PLS and all others. My old app did not work with the new operating system on my iPad. Sure glad I found this. Highly recommended. Thank you Ton.
This is great app! It can be customized to suit yourself and is very powerful.
I love this app and it works great on my new iPad 2017 The newest model
Wow! Super helpful!!!
We were looking for simple app for use by our 12 year old autistic son. He is verbal, but does not speak loud. The app is highly customizable. Will provide additional feedback after 6-months of use.
I have tried other AAC apps, but none of them works well with switch control. I am glad that I found Speech Assistant! And the other app, Speech Assistant Switch makes the scanning more easier too!
I just started to dive in to using this program and I am totally amazed at the ease of programming my specific speech pattern. This is a very good nap and is worth the cost. Thank you.
This app has given me the ability to converse with people again. I have tried other apps but this one stands alone. It is so versatile and easy to use. I especially appreciate the flexibility to add and delete phrases, and sort them! Well worth the minimal investment. Couldn’t be more pleased. Thank you for the app.
Speech Assistant AAC Negative Reviews and Ratings
I purchased this application because it said it syncs between mobile devices, however despite having the iCloud sync setup on both my iPhone and iPad the edited phrases are not syncing between them. Any assistance on this would be appreciated.
It was a great app the first few months but now just out of the blue the speech button won’t work! I’ve had to delete it and reinstall it twice now. It’s anoying as I have to re-add the phrases. Anyone else have this problem?
It takes time to learn how to use the app. However, syncing from iPad to iPhone isn’t happening. I created a personal tab with phrases in an orderly fashion but when I sync the tab doesn’t show up.
It will be helpful if I can move the position of phrases or categories by dragging the button.
I use it all day and at least every 8 uses it freezes!
We are not space related box small box what is large box.
The voices in the app are jarring and not high quality at all.
Bon mais très dispendieux et puis sur d’autres appareils qu’appel l’application est gratuite
I can’t seem to make it work on family sharing
We’re almost in 2025, and there’s no AI that can clone own voice yet? This app should be the first to allow that
Why is there no option to use the uk female voice? It says it uses the native voices for text to speech but won't let me choose the uk female one
