Approved and used by Mike Mangini (Dream Theater, Drummer of the Year*), Tempo Advance is the metronome app to bring your musicianship to the next level. Now our exclusive consultant, Mike has been using Tempo Advance since its inception four years ago as a practice tool and an invaluable companion for his Rhythm Knowledge drumming system.

The new Polyrhythm Mode enables concurrent playback of two meters with different beats per measure, synced on the bar. Find out what any combination of up to 20 beats per measure sounds like.

Retaining the hyper-accurate audio engine from our bestselling Tempo, the UI on Tempo Advance has been rethought to focus on the metronome visual cues.

Auto setlist advancement, accelerando, ritardando and playback tracking makes it possible for you to program count-ins or complex songs with varying tempo, time signatures and rhythms.

Tempo Advance - Metronome App Comments & Reviews

Tempo Advance - Metronome Positive Reviews

You'll not need any other!I teach drums as well as session work and this does everything I need it to. The timers are awesome! I especially like how it is not tied to notation but instead beats per bar and subdivisions. Which means learning a groove in 5/16 the trying to hear it as 10/8 is very easy to configure. Or highlighting clave or other ostinatos to practice over. The other apps are limited to just the meter and subdivisions they have preprogrammed. Just get it. $3 vs $130 I spent on my Dr. Beat 15 years ago is just a better buy especially since it outperforms everything out there..Version: 2.2.2

Missing TutorialI first bought the Tempo app which I am able to work just fine. The idea of polyrhythms and more complex timing structure was intriguing to me, so I bought Tempo Advance. Sadly, I wasn't able to understand how complex tempos were structured in a "song" or how multiple tempos were supposed to fit into the song without consuming a huge amount of space. I went over the videos and in app tutorails a dozen times if once. Since I read and use technical manuals on everything from automotive ABS braking systems to ship board systems on aircraft carriers, I expect an extensive amount of detail, but that's just me. I reached out to the company twice by email for help, but never received a reply either time. I suppose if the company is not interested, neither am I. From reviews I see most are able to use the app fine, but to what capacity I have no idea. I'm going to return this app and keep the Tempo app but I am a bit disappointed. What all of this tells me is that the "developer" and the person who "wrote" the app are not one in the same....Version: 2.2.2

A couple issues but AMAZINGI use this for guitar exercises and it’s absolutely amazing. It’s also awesome for writing music. I feel though as the iOS for Apple has updated I’ve noticed a few hiccups. I use the increase in tempo a lot and it seems that when it’s increasing automatically when it gets to the 3 digit numbers (100+ obviously) only the first 2 digits of the number show up...so say when I go from 95bmp then it bounces up to 100 it only displays 10. And say 115 looks like 11. Not a huge deal and I’ll work around it but I wasn’t sure if you had heard of this and were trying to fix it! Just letting you know! The other issue has seemed to resolve itself with a new phone purchase but the tap tempo action was causing the app to crash, but it seems fine now!.Version: 2.2.3

Worth the money! My guitar teacher suggested I buy this app because of its abilities to set and keep polyrhythmic time. The pleasant clave sound of the clicks is a huge improvement over the noises my prior free metronome app made. While it is a bit challenging to navigate and has many more features than I will likely ever need, the ones I use regularly have proven to be well worth the small purchase price. Musically I have improved by using this app..Version: 2.4

Tempo AdvancedI use this metronome app frequently for my own practice as well as during teaching individual lessons or coaching chamber music. It is reliable and the sound is strong and pleasant. The only caveat is that it opens the polyrhythms inadvertently quite frequently which means I have to stop and take the steps to cancel it. The other issue is that it will revert to 160 without touching anything. If they could build in a way to keep it from doing those two things that happen with a slight touch I guess then I would give it five stars..Version: 2.4

Great app! But complicated...I use this app almost every day, would highly recommend it. I gave it 4 stars, and would have given it 5 if there was an easier way to hide the complexity. I only use the standard one click per beat metronome, but all the advanced features are right up front and I have to tip toe around them to make sure I don’t accidentally press a button the gets the app into a state that is hard to back out of. And I would add that I could use some of the advanced features for sure but they are hard to figure out, so I don’t bother..Version: 2.2.4

GreatI use it only in the simplest settings and the only thing I could wish for would be a feature where the metronome could be set to skip bars. I like to practice keeping a steady tempo and having the click lay out sometimes. That’s the ultimate test of your time I feel. But I haven’t found another app that does that. Oh and Siri integration would be great “hey Siri increase metronome speed by ten beats”. Anyway great app..Version: 2.3.1

Definitely solid, and more...And I agree wholeheartedly with Phelan’s review. It’ll do anything you want/need it to - I really wanted to like other metronomes. But Frozen Ape metronomes are just more solid- don’t crash and work right all the time. And also- per $money?... get the Tempo app if you don’t need this much subdivisional horsepower. Maybe START working on your subdivisions and poly rhythms if you haven’t, with this! Happy subdividing dudes!.Version: 2.3.1

Been Using It for YearsI use this app regularly. Although I’ve been using it for a number of years, I only just now took advantage of the automated tempo-advance feature. Very helpful for bringing a guitar version of a fiddle tune up to speed. (Actually it was a transcription of a Michelle McLaughlin piano piece, but you get the point!). This app and the “Anytune Pro” app have been VERY helpful with my transcription work..Version: 2.2.4

Plenty of creative practice optionsHaving so much control over the beats lets me use the metronome to test and practice my time rather than use the metronome as a crutch. It also has some mixed meter functions that make practicing something like John Adams much easier but I wish it was easier and quicker to make those programs..Version: 2.4

Tempo Adv. Works Well!I'm one of those people that has downloaded dozens of metronome apps looking for one that I like the most. I've downloaded some that had cool features, but the sounds were horrible, or the sounds were quality but the app aesthetics were largely underdeveloped. Tempo Adv. has it all; great sounds, features and all of the above. One feature that would make this app even cooler would be a gap click. Overall, I've been very pleased..Version: 2.2.3

Would be nice to have a sort function...Love this app, and use it regularly, but...I have a Master setlist that has all the songs we play at church. I pull songs for a weekend service into a separate setlist from my Master setlist. Having a sort function on my Master list would make it so much easier to find songs, and eliminate duplicates. Still, all-in-all, a great app!.Version: 2.3.1

I wish these tools existed 35 years ago. This has helped immeasurably with getting a better feel for beat subdivisions like 16th note "triplets", 32nd notes, and beyond. The pendulum metronome was all I had years ago, and not being another Mozart, or Mangini, I really could have used a tool like this. It has helped my guitar practice like nothing else..Version: 2.2.2

The best out there.Been using this app since 2009 or 2010 on tour, in the studio, and in the practice room. It’s still the best. Powerful features (subdivisions 1-20, setlists, automatically advancing/changing tempos) and beautiful, intuitive interface. No other app has that combination. Still use it for everything after all these years..Version: 2.4

ExcellentI am a professional musician and have been using this app for at least the past 5 years. It has all that I need and it works when I need it. The updates to various iOS have been without a glitch. A very dependable and easy to use product. Congrats to the team!.Version: 2.3.2

Time ToolIn all honesty didn’t want to buy one have an old Boss, but old being old, and having some more convenience in programming different accents for grooves as well as having a good tool to break down polyrhythms, was a great selling feature. Getting back into music as a kit drummer, a metronome is priceless, and this delivers..Version: 2.3.1

The Best!I’m a professional drummer and this is far and away the best metronome I’ve ever used. It’s a bit like the top-of-the-line Dr. Beat, but with more functionality. I love being able to change out the sounds, and I really wish I could get Tempo Advance as a replacement for the horrible stock Pro Tools click..Version: 2.3.1

Perfection👍🏻Gotta say you guys have honed this to perfection with the polyrhythm's feature. Keep goin with it boys! Maybe add the ability to increase/decrease/constant tempo with decimals. Sometimes I feel like the difference between 214 and 215 is too great. Decimal numbers would create a smaller increment to walk one up nicely to the whole numbers.Version: 2.4

Great app!Well thought out. It appears to have much more capabilities than I need. Love being able to name the different tempos and time signatures for my original compositions. I recently tried creating polyrhythms and found that the app is intuitive and easy to figure it out..Version: 2.2.2

Best on the market!I've used Frozen Ape's apps for a long time because they have always had many easy-to-use features, but the tempo change automation feature is what has made the biggest difference in my practicing..Version: 2.3.1

Love the app but where are the click track functions? The app works great. Period. As a full function metronome, multimeter, and even polynome with subdivisions it is excellent. But seriously, Mike Mangini doesn't play tracks that stay in the same meter for the entire tune. For no other reason than Mike's sheer brilliance the app MUST include (in a future update) the ability to add multiple (infinite) measures with independent meter, tempo, accents, etc... Thank you for making an awesome app. Well worth the $ and I'll use it a TON to replace the popular Metronome app I have been using. Please think about the click track function! Peace!.Version: 2.2.2

My favorite metLiterally my favorite metronome that I’ve been using for probably 6 or 7 years. No other met has the options that I love about this app. Between the range of subdivisions and polyrhythms this app is amazing..Version: 2.4

Fantastic!!Being an avid percussionist, this app has been such a vital part of my practice time! I was introduced to the app by my Drumline instructor a couple years ago and have used it almost religiously in the years since! Definitely worth the price!.Version: 2.2.3

Perfect if added a RANDOMIZERIf there was a setting where u can choose what percentage of a change u want from your current beat and/or tempo, that would make this app complete 👽🛸mutate percentage randomizer function pls💚💚💚.Version: 2.4

You Don’t have this app what is wrong with you😀😀😀😀I have. Had this app since its release .. so Easy to use and perfect for Bass/Drummers like me or anyone else who wants to learn how to hang out in groove with out getting lost ...muahaha.Version: 2.4

Absolutely phenomenal. This app is the smartest decision you could make if you want to move forward as a musician. It allows you complete creative freedom, yet keeps you in line perfectly. 10/10 would recommend.Version: 2.2.2

StylishThis app is amazing. I was a big fan of the previous tempo app and this one does not disappoint! Powerful, in addition to a visually pleasing and well-organized interface, which is bundled with the ability to make your own themes..Version: 2.3.2

Wow!The polyrhythm mode is amazing! Really helps clarify both rhythms and my timing for them has never been better since using this app. Also exploring crazy stuff like 7 against 8 in this app is just super fun! Thanks so much for creating this :).Version: 2.3.1

Great for percussionistI really love tempo advance. Even when you turn off your iPad or go to another app it is still there. I give this a five star for a good reason.Version: 2.3.1

Good for what you needDon’t get me wrong, this is the best app for a metronome available…with that being said HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU NOT HAVE SPLIT SCREEN AVAILABLE. Fix it. Gigging musicians need cheat sheets and guides for new or first time performances….why split screen is not built in yet is mind blowing to me. ESPECIALLY on the iPad version…...Version: 2.4

Still needs work but worth supportingYeah it’s good and has lots of potential, but the interface is not very user-friendly and the tutorial is cursory at best. I don’t know why they can’t put together a decent manual that you can download from the website..Version: 2.4

Feature-rich but docs are weak and support non-existentI've encountered two functions that are not documented. I used their web site contact form but no response after a few days. It may not be a completely finished app, but is a good start..Version: 2.2.2

Use for click track, but...Wish it could store songs I input in an alphabetical list from which I could select to create a new set each week. Other than that, this is a very useful metronome.Version: 2.3.2

And more! This is a great app! Many many uses and easy set list management. Definitely would recommend to any beginner or pro..Version: 2.2.2

Speed up featureLove this metronome! The speed up feature really is practical and great for learning music slowly then gradually speeding up. 👍🏽.Version: 2.4

Fantastic metronomeOdd division Tuplets? Sure! Super slow/fast tempo? Duh. Road map & save a set list? Easily. This is the best metronome I've ever bought and will likely be the best you will have bought, too..Version: 2.2.2

Best metronome for traditional musicThis metronome allows you to set up incredible combinations of 2, 3 and 4 beat patterns for traditional music, which often has complex time signatures..Version: 2.2.2

Great easy to useThis has become my go to metronome app. I like the easy of use and intuitive function..Version: 2.4

User interfaceWhy is the start/stop button so close to where the swipe up motion is initiated?.Version: 2.4

Love itI'm a professional (gigs and teaching) and I've used this app for a few years. I love the customizability of sounds, time signatures, beat patterns, etc. it's my go-to app!.Version: 2.2.2

GreatI’ve used this for years now. Great metronome only wish that it had the feature to airdrop to my iPad set list..Version: 2.4

Super!Great app. With just a quick intro from my guitar teacher, I have both simple and complex tempo bits to play with. The flexibility of this app is great. It is well worth the investment..Version: 2.2.2

EverythingHas just about everything you need in a metronome. Great to practice with.Version: 2.4

My favoriteI've explored a number of metronome apps. Tempo Advance is my all time favorite. It's so easy to add subdivisions of the beat with one swipe and it is very flexible. I love this metronome..Version: 2.2.2

Well worth the money!Easy to use & easy to go as deep as you need. Everyone will benefit from using it..Version: 2.4

The best metronome appIt’s super easy to customize the metronome to what you need; there are a lot of varieties of sounds for the click and it’s really easy to program subdivisions! I love using it for teaching students to play to the metronome..Version: 2.4

A real pro appSubdivisions, any way you want it.Version: 2.3.1

Almost perfectI love this app but I wish there was a way to enlarge the start and stop button for easier control for live use. Would be great if I didn’t have to aim my finger at the button and could just easily integrate the click into live playing. Other than that, best click app I’ve ever used..Version: 2.3.1

Everything you need.Great for creating set lists Taping tempo Subdividing No complaints at all.Version: 2.3.1

Out of dateA little tricky to get used to the editing but a very good tool and one of a kind in terms of tempo alignment with set lists..Version: 2.3.1

PerfectGets any job done..Version: 2.2.3

Worth the money! Most useful and versatile metronome I've used. Great for teaching and more complex exercises.Version: 2.2.2

Very DetailedExcellent..Version: 2.2.2

Great toolFinally a metronome which will do all the different time signatures and tempi that I work with in the study of classical to contemporary music. It has more features than I have had time to learn how to use yet so there is still untapped potential in the app. Well worth the few dollars it cost..Version: 2.2.2

Wicked metronome! The perfect app for what it is. Does everything you'd expect, really really well, and the setlist feature is brilliant! As a drummer I use it constantly!.Version: 1.4

Love itAs a professional musician I have to say that Tempo does everything I need it to and more..Version: 2.1

Overly complicated. That is all. Set it to 2/4 110bpm and get twice the ticks I want. So in the trash you go..Version: 1.2.1

Amazing App!Such a handy tool for having playlists of your sets. Helps me so much.Version: 2.1

Excellent timekeeperThis is my "go to" metronome app. It has a remarkably large feature set, but doesn't fail where it's most important – keeping time..Version: 2.0.3

Perfeito para os baterasAposentei o meu metrônomo TAMA! Esse é muito melhor!!! Além do mais o volume de saída é bem alto, suficiente pra não precisar de amplificador para fones de ouvido!.Version: 2.0.2

Good for gigTakes some getting used to, but now that I know how to use it it's perfect..Version: 2.0.1

Good apps.Love it!.Version: 2.0.2

GreatLove the polyrhythms and how easy it is to use!.Version: 2.0.1

Awesome update! Thanks for adding two track polyrhythms! As a drummer, this metronome just became so much more useful. Love the new interface too. Definitely a 5 star app!.Version: 2.0.1

Rhythm Knowledge loves this appThis app offered me several things that I wanted in a practicing app including the bar/timing counter that I find absent on most metronomes. This allows you to keep track of how long or how many bars of a particular exercise you have done without a separate app or timer. In addition the polyrhythm mode is sick for listening to almost any polyrhythm and playing along with it at any tempo and you can also set up any subdivision you want from 1-19 and time signature from 1-19. Overall I like it a lot!.Version: 2.0.1

It sure is a metronome!!It clicks in time so that’s good. The initial layout is pretty clunky, I have no idea why they made it look like archery practice, but once you figure out the layout it’s okay. I think more time should have been spent on functionality rather than making a fancy GUI. I mostly use my metronome apps for teaching and I can already foresee the new layout confusing the younger students at first, but that’s not too big of a deal. On my phone the tempo drag can only drag to faster tempos and can’t be dragged to a slower tempo while in the vertical screen. I’m sure it’s just a bug with the iPhone4 so I’m not too worried about it since it drags tempos fine in the horizontal screen mode. It would be nice if you could remove the preset/setlist screen, or have it in a different mode. Say if you had a “gig” view you could toggle that would go directly to the set lists so they wouldn’t always be in view. It would also be nice if you could set the "gradual speed-up" and “timer” options how you wanted and then it would be able to turn them off and on at the top of the screen rather than having to go through the options menu for each to toggle them off and on. Another thing that would be great is if the timer function could be reset when you stop the metronome. It seems weird to me that you have to wait for the timer to reach zero before the timer resets. Say you start the metronome too fast for what you wanted, when you have the timer running, and now you wanted to start all over again. Too bad because the timer will stay on whatever time it was on when you stopped the metronome and you’ll have to wait for it to “zero out” before the timer is at the full time you wanted. All in all in lights up and beeps in time, but the layout is kind of funny. Is it worth $4? Not really, but it has the functions I needed so I had to pay for it now that the functions I needed are no longer on the cheaper version..Version: 2.0.1

The best. This is the best metronome I have ever used. It is incredibly easy to maneuver tempos, subdivisions and accent patterns. As a musician, I prefer this over any metronome - even a DB-90..Version: 1.4.1

Great appI use this app all the time for my chamber choir. I can enter all the pieces for an upcoming concert in order and cycle through them to practice the tempos. I can also use it at practice to ensure that I'm setting the correct tempo. Well done!!.Version: 1.3.1

IPhone 5/iPod touch 5th GenerationPlease make it capable for iPhone 5/ iPod touch 5th generation!.Version: 1.4.1

Great, only one flaw...I've had this app for over a year. I'm a professional Musician and teach and play drums and guitar. I use this app everyday teaching and on gigs. It has everything, however my only complaint (and I really hope someone reads this and remedies the problem) is that the area you touch for changing the tempo is so small that it makes it difficult to quickly change the tempo. Often while trying to bump the tempo up a few beats the app thinks I'm tapping a new tempo or opens the numeric pad. After a year of using the app it's still annoying. Why is the area for tapping to change the click sounds so big? There should be an option to swap these touch areas and have the larger area adjusting tempo..Version: 1.4.1

Great app but occasional glitchesAgree with everything everyone says about this being an awesome tempo app. Very occasional freezes where it is jut stuck on beat 1 with no sound and I have to restart the phone for it to work again. Glitches like that, while very rare, make it a little sketchy for use in live music settings..Version: 1.1.4

Great app Facebook integration annoyingI love this app but hate the Facebook integration. Option to remove this would be nice..Version: 1.2.1

Fantastic! Much better than the free metronomes. Why pay 2$ when you can get a metronome for free? Because this metronome is so much better. Read the help! It only takes 3 minutes and once you figure out the unconventional interface, it's actually really easy to use. Things I love about this metronome: *Steady tempo - even when your phone is checking mail or downloading apps *Great interface - takes a minute to learn, but then it's super quick to change tempos *Auto tempo increases - practise for a set number of bars and then try it again faster. *Accent notes - place them anywhere in the beat. A great app. Ten years ago I paid $20 for a digital metronome that didn't have half these features..Version: 1.1.4

Need a metronome? This is it.Nothing else comes close. There's no better metronome in the app store. I've been using Tempo forever, and this is the best version yet..Version: 1.1.4

Replaces my $100 metronome! This is SUCH a great app, I decided to write my first review after buying numerous apps! In a nutshell, this app is so great, it will replace my Tama Rhythm Watch, which costs about $100. I'm a drummer in a band that gigs, and I need numerous functions, especially the ability to STORE and easily recall tempos, so I can quickly get the tempo for the 'next' song. This app not only supports programmable memories, but features MULTIPLE set lists. What I've done is set up a "master set list" in alphabetical order, then for each gig, I can create a separate set list, and COPY the songs and adjust their order. This was a chore with my $100 Rhythm Watch AND that thing only allowed 30 presets. This baby stores 100 songs per setlist! Many other features, such subdivisions, accents, numerous time sigs, bar counter, reference tone (tuner), visual and audio tweaks galore, etc. I researched tons of metronome apps, and this one shines head and shoulders above the rest..Version: 0

BPMs keep switchingI'm really enjoying this app - well done! I'm just having a problem with my track bpms being switched. Setting them is no problem, but they keep being reversed with each other. Is this a glitch or am I missing a step?!.Version: 0

Take your timeThere is no doubt this version is way better than the first one, specially if you are a professional musician. You just need to take 20min of your time to understand all the features. 2 bucks for this metronome is the best deal in the market. Keep the good work frozenape!.Version: 0
