Mindfulness means noticing and paying attention to what is going on in the present moment, without passing judgment on it. Mindfulness has been shown to be effective for reducing stress, improving emotional balance, increasing self-awareness, helping with anxiety and depression, and coping more effectively with chronic pain.
Mindfulness Coach 2.0 was developed to help Veterans, Service members, and others learn how to practice mindfulness. The app provides a gradual, self-guided training program designed to help you understand and adopt a simple mindfulness practice. Mindfulness Coach also offers a library of information about mindfulness (for example “What is Mindfulness?”, “How to Anchor Your Attention”), 12 audio-guided mindfulness exercises and a growing catalog of additional exercises available for free download, goal-setting and tracking, a mindfulness mastery assessment to help you track your progress over time, customizable reminders, and access to other support and crisis resources. Mindfulness Coach is free, doesn’t take or share any of your personal information, and doesn’t require add-on purchases.
Mindfulness Coach was created by VA’s National Center for PTSD.
Mindfulness Coach App Comments & Reviews
Mindfulness Coach Positive Reviews
This App is EverythingThis app is an overlooked gem. I think because it was developed by the Federal Government for Veterans people think it is sub par or not confidential. Neither is true. It’s an outstanding app for both the novice and the advanced student. The app is complete and can teach you meditation, explain mindfulness, support your practice when you need it, monitor your progress, and be your credible reliable mindfulness coach in your pocket. The graphics are soothing and the content sound and current. The app is FREE and does not track you. You have nothing to lose but stress, fatigue, anxiety, sadness, and the rest. You have everything to gain. Everything. What are you waiting for..Version: 2.6
The BEST mindfulness/ meditation app EVER!I downloaded so many mindfulness and meditation apps, Alot of them you had to pay for to get the extra features or they were complicated to use. This app has NONE of that! No cost what so ever! They have included some great reading as well as minful exercises to really teach you and help you be a better you and overcome whatever you're going through. I also LOVE the lady's voice, she's quite soothing. And they have extra exercises you can download - once again, COMPLETLY FREE! So if you're as frustrated as I was, having trouble sleeping or dealing with issues and can't find an app without hidden fees and that isn't super complicated - download NOW!.Version: 2.2
Love this app...but needs some changesI absolutely love this app!! I downloaded a lot of mindfulness apps and this is my favorite. The only complaint I have is the voices and recordings could be done a lot better. Some of the recordings it’s easy to hear the speaker turn on and off the microphone. At least add a little music in the background to lessen that. Also, some of the voices are just not good voices for mindfulness. The app itself is amazing and by far the best I found especially for learning mindfulness! I hate to even take off a star... but the fact is... it could definitely be improved upon. Please don’t let this app just ‘be’. Make it even better because it’s an amazing tool in recovery!! I am a veteran and my therapist suggested this app for me..Version: 2.3
Mindful of being mindfulI’ve often heard of the phrase mindful, but it never felt relatable until I started using this app. In just a few meditations I have already adapted techniques that created a space for awareness of my actions and reactions, by deploying a broadcast delay technique, or intentional response delay just live TV broadcasters do when broadcasting live. This allows me to calm my mind and approach daily travels with control and peace. I’ve also learned to treat anxiety symptoms through controlled breathing exercises I have adapted along the way. #highlyrecommend..Version: 2.6
Have an Open MindSo I recently discovered that I have some deep rooted depression and mental health issues that I’ve never resolved. My friend recommended this app and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with it. I would just ask that anyone suffering, big or small to have an open mind. If you’re anything like me I was trying to roll my eyes but wanted to at least TRY. And I’m so glad I did! It’s practical and allows you to document your thoughts, create goals, and watch your little tree grow. 🥹.Version: 2.6
Great for PTSDThis app breaks down mindful meditation in an appealing way to us less spiritual vets. I feel like it’s geared towards the way the military trained me to think and deal with issues in a clear and concise way. It’s easy to figure out how to use, but would benefit from a small tutorial. Mindfulness has improved how I think/feel tremendously, and has improved all my relationships. I’m a kinder more compassionate person now. I’ve always heard it’s best to live “in the moment” and this app teaches how to do that..Version: 2.6
This program has changed my life.Five years ago I suffered a massive heart attack and while in hospital I was introduced to the program thru a fellow veteran. I have since advanced beyond what it offers however I continue to return from time to time and it’s always there when I do need it. Like today, the reason this popped up and asked for a review cause I was just about to do the mindful walking exercise. I fully endorse and recommend this app..Version: 2.9
AmazingThis is my favorite app and I recommend it to everyone. (And I’ve tried a lot of mindfulness apps—one was $70/ year too!) This app has a wide selection of high-quality, guided meditations, and going through the different “levels” was extremely motivating. There are a host of additional resources I’m still exploring. I credit this app for my ability to meditate 20 mins/day after only a few months of practice..Version: 2.9
Outstanding App and Extremely HelpfullI’ve tried plenty of mindfulness apps, books, tapes, CD’s, etc., but I’ve found this to be my go-to application. I went though the program several times, then later on picked and chose the areas that I needed help with. When I get away from meditating or having a difficult time, this is the first place I go to in order to get back on track. It’s like having an immediate counselor on hand..Version: 2.3.1
Developed To Help PTSD for US Military - Best Mindfulness App Out ThereThis app was developed for helping military personnel suffering from PSTD - it is a very well thought through easy to use teaching & practice aid. Does as much & probably more than several other paid apps I have used for meditation & mindfulness - guess it is a paid app via US taxes but free from the App Store - can’t understand why anyone would pay for anything else when this is available and it is unbelievable it is for FREE.Version: 2.1
Give this a try! It's worth it!Visual and/or audio! Body scan is great, I use it when I need help falling asleep!! Breathing tool (9minutes) is by far the best I've found for daily/nightly relaxation!!! Many other meditation options available on this free app for ANYONE to use!!!! Remember, you can modify your positions to fit your needs. The breathing says to sit, but I lay. The body scan is longer, so depending on what I need it for (meditation or sleeping), I sit or lay down..Version: 1.4
Somewhat limitedI’ve just started using this app and I am quite familiar with meditation. I don’t understand why most of the meditations have you sitting in a chair. I’m more comfortable and use to meditation done on the floor. I would go ahead and use the floor anyway, but the speaker continues to speak of the floor. I find it hard to believe that users are giving this app a five star when it does not earn it. I have books that I will use instead, but I thought it would be nice to use an app that would keep track of it. What a shame!.Version: 2.3
Easy to useMeditation is not something I do well. This completely FREE app makes it easy. You can start at just 1 minute if you want after a gentle voice eases you into a little quiet time with your brain. At the end a soft bell sounds to let you know when to stop. Meditation takes practice and this app will help you enjoy the process..Version: 2.9
THE BEST MEDITATION APPHands down the best mindfulness app. No gimmicks, no fees or subscriptions, no ads. Just Pure, instructive life changing mindfulness. Only thing i would say to the developers, could you please create an organization/filter for the practices tab. When you download the iRest files they are supposed to be listened to in order, but you can’t because they get all mixed up. Could you please fix this?.Version: 2.3
Unbelievable surpriseI can’t believe how this app has helped me with experiencing love and being present. Most of us vets with PTSD and emotional issues have with focus and issues simply being present. This has really helped my love for people and with being present and not focusing on issues that are over. I do it at lunch in my car after I pray everyday and people can really see how calm and present I am..Version: 2.3
Best Meditation App EVERThis really is the best app ever. I use it regularly and i tell all my clients about it. It has the simplest explanations of ehat stuff is. No distractions no pop ups no ads nothing to buy. Just a totally programable meditation timer and a tracking feature and my fav is the mindfulness progress evals i do those once a week to see how my practice has affected my non practicing times..Version: 2.6
DEFINITELY the BESTI have tried a number of meditation apps. This is head and shoulders better than any other I’ve tried. Comprehensive. Adjustable to your capability. Starts at the beginning and builds as your practice improves. I really like how it provides a lot of instruction and background and so many different guided practices. AND it’s totally free. No ads and no push to have you upgrade. THANK YOU VA!.Version: 2.6
Great app! This app is a great tool for learning about mindfulness, and just to be a more relaxed person in general. My therapist recommended it for me, she found out about it from doing her clinical rotations in the VA. I think it’s great! It’s very thorough, has good features, and it’s free with no in-app purchases required!! And no advertisements!! They recently renovated the app completely, and it’s even better than it was before..Version: 2.1
Extremely Well Made ApplicationI field tested this app while I was in the military. It was lacking. In every way it could. I spent last summer in a VA mental health facility for cPTSD and Bipolar Disorder. This app, while not a requirement for treatment, was encouraged. I’m amazed at the improvements, and not just this app. Their entire suite of apps has improved. Don’t be fooled: this isn’t just for soldiers, airmen, and marines. If you’re reading this, it’s for you..Version: 2.6
Mindfulness CoachUnique app. I chose it because it was recommended for veterans and I liked that I could track my progress. Meditations can include a guided introduction or not, as you choose. Each day there is a lesson on a new way of being mindful. I wish there were more trainings, and that I could continue tracking, but I can still use the practice sessions. Otherwise I wouldn’t have given 5 stars.Version: 2.3
Exceptional healingI found this app while working with a viet vet. I ended up using it too, as the phd videos online and activities really do work. It’s excellent self care for those suffering ptsd or anxiety. I’ve even drawn from the facts to help others in need, and shared it with a counselor for her own self care, or referral to others who use technology..Version: 2.9
I’ve tried them all, this is the bestI’ve read many books, watched many videos and have taught an Eckhart Tolle group of over 200 k people online daily for 4-5 years. This app, hands down is the best tool to step into mindfulness with, beginners or advanced. If Tolle, Donald Walsh etc and nonduality is not getting you anywhere or even if it has, try this. This app is FREE. The people who made this app didn’t make it to monetize off of. They’ve made it to be effective and it is exactly that, effective. You just might be really pleasantly surprised. The only thing that I would like to see fixed is the counter that keeps track of how many days in a row you use the app. It doesn’t work a lot of times, maybe it is to do with change of month and new year. I have used this app every day for almost 4 months and the counter keeps resetting. Other than this very minor issue it is hands down the very best mindfulness app that I’ve used over the years. There are also links in the app to get more free exercises that are really awesome as well from iRest. Do yourself a favor and try this app. Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it’s poorly designed or that it doesn’t work as well as other mindfulness apps. I have several apps including Wake Up and this one is just as good and effective as that expensive app. One other thing that I would love to see covered by this app is “non-striving and non-doing”. If these are understood mindfulness is a cake walk. It is also the same as Wu Wei non-striving and non-doing. Everything that we need is right here in this moment, anything else is a desire and is mind-made suffering because we struggle to achieve a goal in the hopes that when we get to that goal we’ll be happy or when “I retire” I’ll be happy or when “I hit the lotto, I’ll be happy”. All those goals that we rely on to make us happy in a future moment is like having a stick with a carrot dangling out in front of us, and we constantly try to catch it or get to, not realizing that the chasing after it, is what creates a LOT of suffering AND takes us away from this moment. If we can see this and intentionally just Stop chasing a future moment and be Here Now, we can have peace, joy and contentment. It really is that simple. Thank you so much to the developers and VA for making this free and available to everyone, veteran or civilian. 🙏🏼🙏🏼❤️.Version: 2.6
FulfilledI really enjoy this app. It helps me to focus on myself and my emotions. When I am consciously aware of breathing and the sounds around me, I am able to my thoughts and feeling in perspective. Each day I become aware of myself by using this app and it helps me to feel more like my usual self before depression was in my life..Version: 2.7
Needs more to doIts a good idea to have the tree growing and stuff but a lot of it is reading little paragraphs about what stuff means (like what mindfulness means and how you can be more mindful etc.) and there are things where you sit down and a lady talks and stuff but the only thing I actually use it for is the goals. They have a thing where you write in goals and then you say what % successful you were at completing your goal. So it’s a good idea but it needs more things to do. Thanks!!!.Version: 2.3
Content great, totally free but buggySometimes the app times out during practice and my phone will go to sleep so the end chime will not go off nor with the practice get logged. Not all the time though. You also can't reliably setup the intro in the practice, the sliders don't work. Overall a quality app, content-wise, but it has annoying bugs..Version: 2.6
Amazing! This app is seriously so well done and has so much helpful content, I am amazed that it is free. It has become an integral part of my mornings and I absolutely love the educational portion! They give you information and then give you the opportunity to practice and log the work you’ve done. The resources are truly fantastic. ABSOLUTELY LOVE!!.Version: 2.6
App malfunctionHello. I am leaving a kind review to inform you about a bug that occurs. I am sure that you are aware however reminders are nice. I have been occurring clock malfunction during the last timer of “Mindfulness Breathing “ which does not speak. The timer does not show moving numbers. My most recent experience with this did not start the timer at all and a previous one ran a couple seconds only to stop the timer shortly after. I am running on an iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 18.6.2 and the Mindfulness app is running on version 2.9. I love this app and I hope this review helps!.Version: 2.9
Mindfulness trainingThis app was introduced by my VA therapist to do the work and reorganize my brain after years of psych meds treating ptsd and drug and alcohol dependency.. to all my brothers in arms suffering from anxiety and depression this app together with Christ, a great therapist and psychiatrist can get you to be in the present, awake and aware of your self and others. I love this app!!.Version: 2.9
Perfect appIt is so refreshing to use an app earnestly designed to help you, versus one that is trying to get you to “pay for premium.” The education is gentle, progressive, and on point. The features are easy to find and use. One improvement I would suggest: make the visual objects high res and zoomable..Version: 2.9
Make Mindfulness Part of You LifeThis App combines training, practice and record keeping to help you make mindfulness part of your everyday routine and your life. It is my daily companion and has helped me deal with stress and the daily ups and downs of life. I have found no better mindfulness App..Version: 2.9
Nice to haveI enjoy the use of the app for easy access and isolation from distractions. The app allows me to not get distracted while searching for a relaxation video. The ability to tailor the session to my availability is something that works well for a quick relaxation session..Version: 2.8
Simple and greatThis is the best app out there and it’s completely free. This app has helped me with my emotional problems and established good daily mindfulness practice in my life. I wish that other mental health and general wellbeing apps would take a lesson from this one. Getting help shouldn’t be locked behind paywalls and monthly subscriptions. Thank you for the great app!.Version: 2.3
Trying to understandThe interaction between my body and my mind, in these stressful, anxious times .. particularly as I have plenty of time almost hiding out in my apartment ... so when I tried this it has helped me reach a calmness. I practice and then go back and start again. It gets easier to focus with practice. Cudo's to the VA..Version: 2.3
Amazing! Not a veteran, but I’m a career emt and PTSD sufferer since the age of 7. Years in rescue have only added to the issues. This app has been a dramatic help! I have less nightmares, panic attacks are easier to control, and flashbacks are few and far between! The best part is it’s FREE! Completely 100% free!.Version: 2.6
Extremely helpful!!!I wanted to try something like this for a while... but was overwhelmed with too many options. Someone recommended this app to me and it has been a truly helpful resource! It is easy to understand and navigate and has really been beneficial for me! It’s a must have for me!.Version: 2.2
ExcellentSkip the apps that charge and give this a go. It’s equal to the apps that charge $40+ and I’ve tried those too. But quality equal to those and this app is free, easy choice what to continue to use. Great practices and response developer to feedback..Version: 2.6
Soothing VoiceThis app has a soothing feminine voice that is clear with no accent. The segments of the sessions transition flawlessly. I have found it very easy to use, and setting the reminder alert helps me stay the course. Great Choice for PTSD anxiety episodes. Thanks!.Version: 2.9
Great foundational appI got this app because it seemed to be solid and all business without unnecessary bell and whistles nor freemium items they were always selling. With that expectation I have been very pleased and would recommend.Version: 2.6
Excellent ResourceA friend of mine who is a 3 time combat veteran shared this app with me when I was going through a difficult time. The coaching and trainings taught me how to manage the difficult days and to learn ways to work through them. This is a fantastic resource..Version: 2.3
Great intro, one suggestionThis app is a great introduction to mindfulness and meditation. I do have one suggestion: use a naming convention that identifies the series that a practice belongs in. When you download additional tools (like iRest) the exercises are sorted alphabetically among the default ones. There’s no guide to indicate which order to do the exercises (or even whether they are from the original series or something else). I.e.: Mindfulness 1: Seated Practice, Mindfulness 2: Awareness of Breathe, iRest 1: Heart Felt Mission, etc. iRest 2: (Whichever one comes 2nd, I haven’t figured it out yet).Version: 2.6
Most cost effective app on the store! This app provides evidence-based mindfulness apps for free. I couple this with yoga through Veterans Yoga Project, which is free for U.S. veterans, and have had a ton of success when I do both regularly. Mindfulness is a must though!.Version: 2.6
Simply the best!!I’ve tried a few apps. This has been the most helpful to me. I recommend it to all kinds of people. It’s learning program is exceptionally slow with low expectations. Easy; try it!.Version: 2.6
Awesome!I love this app. This is the first review I have done for an app. I try to use this app on a daily basis. I try to tell everyone about this app. I love that they have the tree that grows. It is like a little positive reinforcement. I know it sounds silly but it’s satisfying. I hope you enjoy this app as much as I do..Version: 2.0
Good Guide for MeditationAs a former meditation teacher I am always looking for apps to recommend to family & friends that want to start a practice. This is perfect. Also I love the background info abt meditation and how it takes time.Version: 2.6
Grateful!I love the clear, inspiring way every meditation practice is presented. The more I practice , the more I feel open to accept every moment as it is !! More willing to accept my feelings and emotions and not being defined by them . Thank you !!.Version: 2.3
Veterans Don’t overlook this app!!!This is a wonderful app and I’m so impressed with the offerings within the app. I’m able to share this with other veterans and it’s free which makes it even more wonderful!.Version: 2.6
So helpfulI am grateful to the VA for this app. It guides you gently toward increasing mindfulness. I’m not a vet myself, but I’m honored to think that I am traveling this path with those who have served and are now developing the tools they need to live healthy lives after their service for our country..Version: 2.3
Take a deep breath & exhale slowly to relax your mindBy mindfully being aware of what we are presently experiencing with our senses our thoughts can become focused on the present, instead of the past or future.Version: 2.9
AnxietyWas recommended this app by my therapist and it's worked wonders. I suffer from ADHD-inattentive and generalized anxiety disorder. This app helped me to better focus on the present moment and avoid internal judgment. I truly recommend it but also talk to your therapist!.Version: 2.7
Therapy meditationGreat way to learn meditation with modern methods and not even realizing you’re doing meditation. Helps with overcoming fears and being stuck in certain thought processes and changing harmful thinking patterns. I love this app, very helpful..Version: 2.6
BEST MINDFULNESS APP HANDS DOWNI love meditation apps. I’ve downloaded every one I can find. The user interface isn’t shiny and new, but the content is unparalleled..Version: 2.3
Exceptional App for its Function and ContentQuality material in an easy to use platform. I use it daily and it has become part of my practice. Would recommend to friends and family or anyone who is struggling to find calm..Version: 2.2
A simple appThe app doesn’t have too many distracting choices and has no videos. They are not trying to get you onboard everyday onto a premium service. The ui doesn’t feel like an app sometimes it feels like a notebook that is not shiny. I love the simplicity of this app..Version: 2.7
Really usefulSimple, to the point, not trying to sell me something or distract me. A very useful tool for daily mindfulness practice..Version: 2.7
Works except for breathe featureApp works great, love the tree growing everytime you meditate it keeps you motivated. However when you use the breathe function, for the timer to actually stop when you are done meditating your phone has to be on. If you let your phones screen go black then the timer won’t go off, so if you don’t have a lot of battery or use low battery mode it won’t work. Besides that works great..Version: 2.7
Best Mindfulness App Available!I have explored many mindfulness apps over the years, and hands down this one is the best one out there. It contains the basic information found in other apps, but then expands on information and provides assessments and feedback that are unparalleled. It was refreshing to actually learn something new after so many years! I would definitely recommend this app to everyone. Graphics aren’t flashy and presentation is simple and compliment the information presented very well. I look forward to logging on everyday..Version: 2.6
This is a great app for all ages and helps in day-to-day lifeThis app has helped me a lot with realizing any tension and has helped me focus better. I honestly love this app..Version: 2.3.1

MindfulnessAmazing app. Really enjoying the exercises. Thanks..Version: 2.3
Fantastic and FreeI’m building skills through practice and it feels terrific..Version: 2.3
This is amazing!I love using this app as it helps me everyday to stay focus in the present. I was afraid that I would have to pay to get the complete thing but it’s all free and that’s what I like about it! Many mindfulness apps make you pay or do a free trial before you get the real stuff but this app is none of that. It’s simple, effective, and rewarding as you keep using it!.Version: 2.3
Thank you!If I hadn’t been told of this app I wouldn’t have lasted my first week back on the job!.Version: 2.1
ParamedicJust started using this. I’m a paramedic and 911 dispatcher. Thank you for making this..Version: 2.0
The upgrade needs an upgradeThe graphic is nice but hey, my eyes are closed. I wish the text of the sitting meditation was improved, I didn’t care for the voice sound and the three bell rings at the end could be softer..Version: 2.0
