TroutRoutes: Fly Fishing App App Comments & Reviews

TroutRoutes: Fly Fishing App Positive Reviews

Trout RoutesPersonally, I have not had any real complaints about the app. I find that it is user friendly and relays accurate gauge information. The easements and access areas have been pretty spot on. I what would be cool is integrating what some streams are stocked with or when they are stocked based off of state DNR websites. If the app was free I wouldn’t expect it, but as prices creep up more features like this would be cool. Like… where can find those greenback cutthroat… lol -Will.Version: 5.0.4

Great tool, if it worked. (For the most part)After using trout routes for a couple weeks now (buying the subscription and all), I am mostly pleased with how this app operates. I’ve discovered streams and rivers across my state, and surrounding states, and it has assisted me in my journey hunting down the best streams and spots to go for trout. However, the entire time I’ve used the app, I only have a limited amount of time before it starts crashing. And when it crashes once, it doesn’t stop. I won’t know if it will only crash one time, or continue to crash when I open the app back up and try to select ANYTHING or move the map AT ALL. I’m sad that I have to give it such a low review, but I’m forced to do so after also not getting ANY response from the complaint I sent through the app/website. Overall, I’m sad I spent the money on this app to have nothing but disappointment most of the time after I have limited time actually being able to be inside the app without it crashing. I’d be glad to rate this app 5 stars if this issue can be fixed. I hope it does, because I don’t want to use Fishbrain. It just sounds stupid. Rant over.Version: 5.0.19

Was great, then 4.0.0 Came outAbsolutely hate this update. It’s impossible to zoom in without changing the angle you’re viewing at (why would anyone want to view the map at an angle anyway??) and it always rotates so north isn’t at the top when you don’t want it to. Worst of all, the stream gauges are all gone. They still show in the legend, but you can’t actually use them on the map, and especially this time of year that’s a major feature! Update: I should say that I figured out how to get the gauges back again, so that’s good at least, still a wonderful app but man, it’s way more difficult to use now..Version: 4.0.2

Outstanding App!!!Very impressed with the app itself but maybe more impressed with the guys developing it as we all gain more knowledge of what makes the trips successful. I’m old in relationship to most users (I think) so some of the computer stuff can be a challenge but man, I watch the videos and listen to the development team talk about importing all this super sweet data and make it work for us… just amazing guys!! Thanks for being so tech savvy and putting together such a great application. Don’t have a ton of time left on this earth so thank you for helping make that time much much more efficient!! Andy.Version: 5.0.26

Helps Guide Me to Public WaterI have only been using it for about a month but have found it quite useful in excluding trips to small creeks with limited or no public access. On the other hand, it has drawn my attention to a few blue line creeks that had heretofore slipped under my radar. The ability to put private notes at a certain location (such as what worked under what conditions) or drawing lines on maps to mark routes and trails more boldly is a great tool for later trips. A lot of thought has gone into how to make this useful for fisherfolk. Kudos to the creators..Version: 4.7.11

Awesome app that keeps getting better. This app gives you comprehensive info on the trout stream opportunities in the U.S. it works great for planning an adventure and broadened my base of the general hydrology of an area that may have hidden opportunities and just as important the access points. The developers / support peeps are very proactive in responding an/or updating anything that my need tweaking. Well worth the subscription to help you explore a new area or better understand a current one. Love the ability to annotate your own notes and mark where you have been..Version: 5.0.7

It used to work great...I was introduced to this app at a Fly Fishing Expo about a year and a half ago. I’ve introduced others too it as well. It was one of my favorite apps. Unfortunately, with one of the last updates something changed and I can’t open it on either of my two iPhones (6S and an iPhone 8) operating on the most updated operating systems. I would definitely subscribe to it, but now I can’t even open it. Hopefully, this is something the developers figure out soon. Hopefully, I can start using this new version, someday..Version: 3.0.1

Wanted to love it but nowhere near complete for WVSo the functionality and features are great. However I am in WV and it is inaccurate and some streams are missing which is honestly ridiculous considering the WVDNR has their own public mapping of the streams and stocking zones. If you’re going to charge a premium for an app at least make sure all the free information at your fingertips is on there and accurate. I don’t mind paying for it at all but it has to be accurate to what the WVDNR has or it is useless since this is what is used in WV. By all means have the full stream on there but the WVDNR stocking should be on there and all the stocked streams should be there..Version: 4.7.4

Great SupportI made an error in setting up my account and testing the free trial of the Trout Routes service, but after a call to their support number, I received an extremely prompt call back from Zac who was very kind and understanding and helped me resolve my issue right away. We had a great chat on the phone, and I could tell immediately how passionate he was about this project. I’m excited to see this app/service develop moving forward. Support like that in the startup world is hard to come by..Version: 4.2.0

Good app, but why pay premium for public data? It’s well put together, but this is ripping off the state data. I understand the overhead required to keep an app going like this, but it seems like the professional version is the same as the online Trout opportunities interactive mapper (WI DNR), which is free. I see why you should pay a premium for a platform, but you should not pay for public ally acquired data. Regardless of this, I still appreciate the app..Version: 3.0.3

Top Of The ListThis, without a doubt, is the best app out there for fly fishing locations and guides. I’ve tried them all. I’ve decided I’m willing to pay the price for this product. It’s being kept up to date and I’ve found that the developer really cares about his product and what people have to say about making improvements. So just reach out if you need to ask a question or make a comment. Happy fishing..Version: 4.4.2

Love the idea- couple issuesHey guys, awesome idea- I’m a senior studying CS and I am building a similar app just as a personal/resume project. Really well done, but I’ve got one issue and a few suggestions- My issue is that I can’t get stream gauges to show up on the map- maybe this is just a Colorado specific issue but that is the main value for me buying the pro version. Suggestion wise, the map is very busy when zoomed out and lots of filters turned on- would be cool to have some of the access points/ smaller points of interest disappear when zoomed out further, similar to how the map tiles re render with less detail. Let me know if you guys are looking for an intern (or in a year, another dev!). I love fly fishing so this is right up my alley. Great stuff guys! Noah PK.Version: 4.4.6

Great tool, a few bugsFantastic tool for finding new water, access points, trails, etc. Very useful in this regard. A few bugs I’ve noticed: - when you go to upload photos to a location, the app does nothing when you tap “gallery” or “camera”, so you are unable to add photos. - maybe this is my phone, but it’s newer and has storage space, so i don’t know, but I can’t download streams to offline storage. When you go to download them, tapping “download” does nothing and the stream is not filed in offline storage..Version: 4.7.5

Great App for fishing and moreI am new to to Trout fishing and picked this app up at a FF Expo in January of 22’. It has been a God send in providing really useful information for locating streams and how to easily get on the water. I love knowing where private/public property lines are and the ability to add notes to locations I’ve fished. I also realized there are mapped public trails for Michigan State Parks which I like to hike so it serves a dual purpose for me now. Keep up the good work..Version: 4.5.3

Awesome appThis app is one of my all time favorites to use, it’s so easy to find little hidden fishing spots that people don’t go to. The fact that the fishing regulations are available based on what stream you select is one of the best features about this app in my opinion. You can find small trails, primitive camp sites, and small honey holes. Paying for the entire year is a bit steep, but I’m still rating 5 stars. 👍🏽.Version: 4.7.11

Fly Fisherman’s MUST HAVETrout routes will help open up new fishing opportunities to you that you didn’t even know existed! Even ones close to where you live! If you love trout fishing and want to find new places to wet your line. This is your app. Look no further. Especially Amazing for newer anglers looking to find streams to fish. Trout fishing can be daunting at first. Let trout routes help make things easier for you..Version: 5.3.4

A must haveAbsolutely love this app. I fish in Wisconsin’s driftless area where there’s limited cell service at times. That means no maps, etc to help orient to where you are. TroutRoutes must be satellite, tho I’m no tech kind of guy. No matter where I’m at, I can see in real time as I move upstream. Then add in that they show parking, easements, even limits….as that changes from stream to stream. I could go on and on. Suffice to say, TroutRoutes rocks! Thanks guys.Version: 5.3.4

Great but lacks too muchThe app is fine if you’re new to an area but the constant pop-up of stream names and other items is infuriating. You can’t actually dig into a dense area of streams and find what you’re looking for because you have to keep closing the stream information. They also lack stream names and lump many together without section names on them. Truthfully, it’s almost like they just wanted to add too much and then not let you limit what’s actually on the screen.Version: 5.0.26

Fishing GuideGonna have to be honest with you I didn’t think it would be that easy to get that much information from a application like this I tried so many different methods of getting my information to discover perfect spots and it’s great that it’s does so much more campgrounds and trails and much easier to find a good location thank you and I recommend it to everyone.Version: 5.0.14

Need to be able to subscribe monthlyThe app is quite good. I used a 7-Day free trial of the Pro Version for an out-of-state fishing trip to North Georgia with 2 buddies. The Pro Version of the app pinpointed public access for us. I canceled my trial when I got home. When we go back next year I’d be willing to purchase a 1-month subscription. Why not offer that flexibility?.Version: 5.0.15

Trout fishing paradiseThis app is incredible! Conditions, regulations, flow rate, river access, camping and lodging just to name a few. It gives you all the tools to be a traveling fisherman and scout out of state places to maximize your time when you get there! There’s never enough time to fish when you travel from another state but this definitely helps you plan out your trip!.Version: 5.0.3

Really excited about the App until I I couldn’t find California info in there 😔Heard about the App on WildFlys YouTube/Insta. Immediately downloaded only to find no info on California. It looks great but it’s missing the west coast. Also didn’t realize how much fly fishing there was to do in Wisconsin. Lived there for 12 years and never picked up a fly rod🤦‍♂️ Please add Cali, Arizona, Utah and Idaho. I’ll help you collect info if I can!.Version: 4.2.0

Fish SpeciesIt’s a good start, and it’s great to see fishing area access. However, I think one major feature of this app that’s missing is being able to see a list of what fish species are in a stream when you click on a river. Maybe down the line, a map layer could be provided that shows a range. If you’re like me, I’m always looking for maps to show where I can catch native species. Would be great to have that all right here..Version: 5.3.0

Useless nowThis used to be a great app but now has gone down hill. When I first stated to use troutroutes it would let you see the rating of the stream what you should throw and other things that would make your fishing more successful. Now the only thing that you can do without upgrading to pro ($60 pre year) is look at a map that shows the labels of the stream. If you go to open it out it just tells to to get pro. FIX THIS..Version: 5.0.9

The best in the game!I mean it wholeheartedly when I say this app changed my experience of fly fishing. As someone who’s gotten into the sport recently, I never really knew where to go. TroutRoutes changed that. The user experience is so smooth, and their design is visually pleasing on all sites. I recommend looking at their social channels as well. Top notch crew!.Version: 4.7.0

Why? Just why?I was looking forward to using this app. I did know going that if I wanted to use the full spectrum of this app that I’d have to pay for it. What I did not know is that I would not be able to use it at all without paying for it. I can’t get past the ad where it tells you “all the benefits of Pro”. Why can’t I look through the app to see if I actually want to use it or not before paying?.Version: 4.7.10

App CrashesI’m not sure what was changed but the app crashes when I try to open it now. I haven’t been able to access anything recently. I’ve only recently purchased the app. Update: I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app and that fixed my issue. Hopefully, this was just a one time issue. I will update this review after additional. Overall, I really like the app..Version: 5.0.19

Great AppAfter more than two years of use I can recommend this software for the states currently loaded. I use it often at the PRO subscription version. I have used it successfully for WI, MN, IA and find it invaluable. Questions or issues with the software were promptly answered or corrected..Version: 4.5.3

Great app, need to add Oregon ASAPAll worked great for showing access points and easement in Wisconsin Driftless area. Even worked surprisingly well without service. I love the app, but am disappointed that Oregon is not covered as it is where I fish most of the time. I hope you add my area soon! If so I’ll be re applying to the pro account..Version: 4.1.2

1st day ReviewI used TROUTROUTES today for the 1st time in VA. Last night I spent a few hours saying the maps and getting to know the application. I’m a nerd & where I fish has no cell service. This app is amazing! You can set it up for offline use! Bonus! Furthermore, I know my local streams & rivers well. This is spot on. The data is there and accessible. I wish I had this a few years ago. Would have saved a lot of scouting time! Keep up the great work! I will add notes to the areas I know can use some additional notes. I know this might be a slippery slope to go public with tho…. It could get abused..Version: 4.2.0

Finally, an awesome map for Midwest streams! Get it!Have had the app for about a year now. They now have offline maps, and have started to add other unique features and other states beyond Midwest. Well done, and very simple and easy to use. Use this app 9 times to 1 compared to Gaia (better for my uses) but thanks for the great app!.Version: 2.2.2

Canada AccessThe app is good quality but having no Canadian maps really doesn’t allow for you to reach an audience of anglers who mostly or exclusively trout fish..Version: 4.7.11

Still no CanadaI would probably use this unfortunately there is no info on Canada. People come from all over the world to trout fish in BC..Version: 5.2.6

Need Canadian Content!3 Stars just to try not to skew the rating. I haven’t used to app. I do use the onX Hunt app though and the Canadian content on that has improved over recent years. Hopefully this app will follow.Version: 5.1.1

Canada!!!!!App looks great but was wishing to see maps for Canada.Version: 4.7.9

Canada!!Seems like a good app but has no Canada content.Version: 4.5.1

Seems ok if you live in an area listed in their mapsThis seems like a great idea, but is very limited in the areas it covers. Need to have more geographical areas covered. I would suggest expanding to Canada, specifically SW Alberta and Southern BC, both home to some of the best fly fishing locations in the world..Version: 4.2.0
