Compass Free Positive Reviews
Very Simple but effective when explainedSo many negative reviews, ouch... Here’s my take: this is free, and it works. The gray “shadow” moves around the dial VERY slowly throughout the day, so don’t expect this app to ‘do’ something active, it doesn’t. As explained, orient your finger’s sun shadow over the gray shadow on the screen, and you will see roughly accurate cardinal headings (N,S,E,W) but not exact degrees. In a pinch, this will get you un-lost if needed. Works great on my iWatch gen 4 too. No need for cell or WiFi connection. Thanks, app maker!!.Version: 2.2.0
It is not a compass . . .It is an experimental intelligence measurement system. If the 1 stars vs the 4-5 stars are indeed an measurement of those who simply cannot comprehend instructions, or choose not to, it is a sad commentary on the decline of our societies critical thinking skills. It would be interesting to know if the author is indeed in some psychological expermental field and/or a student of same. The app is great though; I actually used it for real once and the measurement was accurate enough for me to get where I had intended..Version: 2.2.0
SundialsI think it’s great if you read the description. It can double as a sundial. Great tool for teaching kids how the earth works, doesn’t work so great on teaching adults to read. Disclaimer: doesn’t work very well on cloudy days... I can’t figure out why? Really... all you haters!.Version: 2.2.0
CompassI liked what AlieninMN wrote, very funny!.Version: 2.2.0
Works finePeople writing negative reviews just do not understand how this compass works. Therefore, they think it does not work. It does. It is a sun compass, not a magnetic compass. The shadow on the compass rotates around according to the time of day, as the sun moves across the sky. So why you put your finger in the middle of the compass perpendicular to the screen, your finger casts a shadow. Align your finger's shadow with the shadow on the compass. Now north will be pointing north, etc. It is not super precise and is not supposed to be. But it is plenty good enough for casual use. A couple minor complaints: I wish the name of the app on the iphone would just say "Compass" rather than "Compa...Free". I don't know how to change the icon name of the app so it isn't truncated with the dots in it. This app would get better reviews if Masayuki did a better job explaining clearly how the app works..Version: 0
Good basic compass - Better IQ testRate this app honestly, then multiply the number of stars you chose by 30 to get a very rough estimate of your IQ. For all those who claim it's frozen or doesn't work, slow down and read the instructions. Still having trouble, try a musical instrument because science isn't your bag. To all those 1 star reviewers, your best bet is just to ask someone for directions and stay in well populated areas. If you can't figure out this basic sun based approximation tool, or slow down enough to read, you have no business using a magnetic compass either - buy a GPS with a motherly voice that says "you are here." Apologies to the author for the preponderance of ignorance in these reviews. You have written a clever and elegant app., given it away for free and this legion of fools protest the fairness of this transaction. "It doesn't even work at night!" Neither do solar panels or Baywatch, does that mean both of those are useless? Note: You should implement correct DLST if it is indeed off..Version: 0
Uses GPS?Works well for an iPhone 3G. The author doesn't go into much detail on what data s/he is using to calculate the shadow, but it's probably a combination of date, time, and GPS coordinates. I was under the impression that an app needs to ask your permission before using your "current location." So either this app doesn't need your latitude and longitude, or it's getting your location without permission. Something to think about. I'd like to see a GPS-based compass that can orient based on direction traveled: pick a point in the distance, start the compass tracking you with GPS, walk toward the point, then when you've walked far enough for the app to tell your direction of travel, you can hold the iPhone in front of you facing toward that point, and the app would point an arrow toward true north relative to the direction you've been traveling. Still not as easy as an iPhone 3G-S, but at least those of us with an old phone would have something that would work on a cloudy day or at night! Maybe in the next update.....Version: 0
Works away from connectionThis is a fantastic app! Marvelous! Wonderful! You don't even need to be connected to any network to use it. It will even work in airplane mode. The reviewers that said it doesn't work don't get it. Maybe they'll get lost and never be able to write ignorant reviews again. My favorite ignoranous wrote "it's just a picture!" The app works by calculating where the sun's shadow would fall if you had it oriented correctly at that time of day...you just work back to correct orientation by aligning the correct shadow to the real shadow of your finger! Old concept updated for simplicity. It works amazingly well! If you don't get it, just chalk it up to your own stupidity or lack if any orientation knowledge. Your choice. You know, maybe charging .99 would keep the morons away! I appreciate your work on this app. THANK YOU to the developer for writing and giving away this great app!.Version: 0
It works and is freeI don’t understand why some reviewers are saying it doesn’t work. I note that when launching Compass Free, it doesn’t ask permission to find your location. So, perhaps it simply looks towards the time zone and country one is in. I’m in the U.S. and all I can say is I took it out yesterday to a road that I know is oriented exactly east–west and where I know for sure where I can find Polaris at night. About an hour short of noon, I tried it. I oriented it horizontally (important), put my finger in the middle, twisted the iPhone until my finger’s shadow pointed the marked direction, and the iPhone was pointing very close to north. It does what it says and it’s free. At least for North American users who can follow directions, I don’t see a problem here. Five stars..Version: 0
You guys are idiotsI've spent several days looking through the reviews for this app and several others, and I have one thing to say... YOU GUYS ARE IDIOTS. There is no way on this planet to put a compass on a device like the iPod touch through downloading it from a program. It is just not possible. The only way to do it is to literally install a real working compass inside of the device. iPods and iPhones were not built with a compass, so you idiots complaining for a real magnetic compass, forget it, it will never happen. You can't take gps to get compass directions without moving. Gps finds your location, and takes your location from two spots to find your heading. This app is designed to take the sun (that big ball of light in the sky) and give you a direction based on time of day and the sun's position. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The directions for this app say to put your finger in the middle of the picture, and then use manual labor (god forbid) to rotate the iPod until the shadow lines up with the line in the image. IT DOESNT DO ANYTHING ELSE!!! For more information, google search "hardware vs software" and read some of the results.Version: 0
Excellent applicationFor those of you that rated this app poorly or do not understand how it works, thank you for giving me the insight as to how ignorant and uneducated the general public really is! I find it scary that our society is inhabited by such morons. If the schools keep handing out undeserved diploma's to people with your lack of understanding for such a simple but useful concept I fear for the future of our world. I doubt many of you wear or even know how to read an analog wrsitwatch these days much less be able to figure out true north by using that analog watch to find true north.. this app makes that task very easy and it could save a life one day. But maybe you are too ignorant to realize that! To the creators of this app. it is very well done!!.Version: 0
The only "compass" for iTouch usersThe iPod Touch does -not- currently have a magnetic compass in it, so an app like this is the only way to find north if you use an iPod Touch. It's a simple (albeit, slightly clever) app that figures out where the sun should be depending on time of day and then uses the shadow cast by your finger to find north. Obviously, it can't be used at night or on an overcast day. There is a setting to allow for southern hemisphere, too. So if you're an iPhone user, get a real compass app that takes advantage of the built-in magnetomoeter. For iPod Touch users, this app works. There is an iAd banner which, in my opinion, is a bit questionable given such a basic app..Version: 1.1.1
Does NOT also make toast! This is a simple sundial compass. I read several reviews before installing, and it seems people expect this app to not only point the direction they are going, but also book a hotel and rental car when they get there. The cardinal directions on the face are NOT supposed to change, as this is a sundial, only the shadow on the screen moves based on the time of day. The directions for use are clearly stated in the provided info. This is a basic survival tool, and its function is obviously lost on the majority of app users. I am very impressed by the clever simplicity and usefulness of this app!.Version: 0
Works just fineI could think this app through enough to use sucessfully after dawn without any sunlight. No, this is not a real compass, it is an app that calculates north using time and sun position. It does not detect Earth's magnetic fields like a real compass. It takes a little more effort and thinking on your part, but still childishly simple to use and quite accurate for an iPhone app if you're bright enough to follow directions. Also, this app is best used during morning and afternoon when the sun isn't overhead and can actually project the shadow of your finger. It also will not work on a cloudy day or in the shade..Version: 0
SAVED MY LIFEI was at a boat, until a wave came and rocked the boat, cracked it, and made it in the middle of ****ing no-where. I pulled out the app, changed the time zone to what the guy with the nice GPS said, and it worked. We kept going west, then north, and we made it back. Oh, and for airheads who don't know how it works, it's by sunlight and the time, why I changed the timezone. You must put it on a table, make the time right, and have the shadow of your finger overlapping the shadow on the screen. There. The north is true, the south is true, the east is true and the west is true. Happy? HUH? AIRHEAD!? YA GOT IT?!.Version: 0
I think it's great, honestly. Now many people who gave bad reviews have one of two problems with it. 1. They can't read the directions by knowing that you put your finger in the center and turn the line under the compass into a shadow to point North. 2. They might not be able to use it at night because they can't use the moon's light that points out the suns location. If you're smart enough to surpass those, you,re good..Version: 0
It's a reverse sundialSeveral reviewers seem to be having problems with this app. Most apparently never read the Help screen. And the name doesn't help! It's actually a reverse sundial. If you know the date and time (and your iPhone/Touch does) and you are in the northern hemisphere (which may not be the case) then you know in which direction the sun should be. From that, you can guess north using a shadow. Clever app, IMHO, but misnamed and not explained in enough depth..Version: 0
Simplicity itselfI'm not sure I believe that there are THAT many ignorants out there in iPhone-land, who can't figure out how to use this clever little gem, or that it's just another indication of where we currently are as the great dumbing down continues toward the final "Mission Accomplished." Common boys (& maybe a few girls too), it ain't that hard to figure out. Hey, I'd like a old-style (traditional) compass that automatically points north too But Free Compass is a pretty nice substitute - at least a good bit of the time - 'till the real thing comes along..Version: 0
GahIt works fine. Like others before me have said, a downside is that it's unusa me at night, and though I suppose if you used the motion sensetivity of the iphone a compass could be made, it wouldn't work well. And to whoever said it freezes: no, it doesn't, I uses the time of day to decide where to put the white line and aside from that, it's just an image. That's why it's free. In daylight, it works fine..Version: 0
MisunderstoodAhem. This app works perfectly well. The average joe just doesn't understand how to use it. It cannot automatically point north. You have to be in sunlight where a shadow can be cast. You match the compass to the shadow, and it gives you direction. And the gps unit in the 3g iPhone won't give you which direction you are facing. Don't load this app if you don't understand the most simple science of where the sun rises and sets..Version: 0
It works wonderfully......and for free! If you read the directions (look at the images given) it works fine. There is no such thing as a compass you just hold up and it rotates to north on apps. If you really want that, please save yourself some frustration and go buy yourself an actual compass. Maybe your grandpa or dad or other resident boyscout even has an old one he would give to you! That's free too!.Version: 0
How stupid can you people be?It's impossible to have a 3GS-like compass app without a magnetic compass in the hardware. A sundial compass is the best you can get with the hardware on the 3G. If you follow the instructions, this app works perfectly to tell you you which direction is north. If you can't make it work, you have some serious mental deficiencies. Try not to give negative reviews because of your own stupidity in the future..Version: 0
So easy to use!Not sure why folks rate it so poorly - it's the simplest way to get a sense of direction without carrying an actual compass with you. You do need to be able to get a shadow from the sun, so consider that. Just put your index finger pointing straight down to the center of the compass in the sun and rotate the compass until your finger matches up with the white 'shadow' and there you have it! So simple..Version: 0
Works great!/how it worksIt's so cool how u can tell witch way your facing and for people that think it doesn't work this is how it works go out side and put it on something flat then put your finger in the center of the compass make sure no ether shadows are on the compass then turn your iPod/iPhone until your shadow is on the white light then take your finger off and now the N E W S is facing the right way.Version: 1.1.1
It does as advertised.Reading these reviews is like watching cavemen trying to figure out how to light a fire. Unless you have the iPhone 3gs, you're not going to have a magnetic compass. In order to use this compass, you must align your shadow with the shadow on the screen, which changes position according to the time. Once you have done this, the compass points in the correct direction..Version: 0
Very useful!Don't expect a moving compass... this is way cooler. I got lost in London and used this to get us back to the train station. I don't use my finger, it's too difficult. I just line the shadow line up with my body's shadow, or anything else. Maybe it's not 100% accurate, but it certainly does the job. It has helped me many times in travelling. Thanks for a great free app!.Version: 0
Very nice solution, old school and educationalWorks exactly as advertised. You line up the shadow to find north (hint the shadow marker moves with time). All the complaints that it doesn't do what they wanted it to do are misguided and unfounded. Yes it is old school. Yes it requires some sunlight. Yes it works better morning or evening. That us what it is designed to do. A sundial, as some misguided people have called it, gives you the time not the direction. Because the app is computing the expected shadow fall when north is aligned this gives you a direction based on the time. Go download one of the hundred other gps based ones (or buy a 3gs) if that is what you want. For me this app goes on the phone..Version: 0
Don't listen to the 1 starsThese guys are computer geeks with no life, and don't know how to use a SUN compass...not a magnetic compass. This app works great. Love it. It's free. Worth every imaginary cent! Everybody should get this right now. Only thing would be to upgrade the graphics just a little bit. But that's just me. Overall ***** (5 stars). Love it. Get it now. Why are you still reading this? Download now!!!.Version: 0
CompassThis app works well and is reasonably accurate. Previous review concerning lack of sufficient sun light to use it is idiotic. What planet do you live on? I had no trouble using it on a cloudy day. Just put your finger over a surface and line the compass guide up with the angle of the shadow under your finger. Daylight savings time is not going to have enough impact on the direction to make much difference..Version: 0
GreatThis comes in handy on hiking trips. Im a boyscout and i use this when me and the boys go hiking or camping and i forget my compas . Its beter than doing it with sticks wich is the same method called the sundail method were you need to know time if u dont have a clock it gets way harder. Big releaf. But only works at day so at night its back to finding the north starwith sticks fo me. Can u make a night vertion. Great app!.Version: 0
Seriously? Most people have no common sense. Which is why I'm not surprised this app has such a low rating. Garentee people will misunderstand this review to... To all who can't read directions go out and by yourselves shovels because your to dumb to do anything but dig ditches for a living. (oppologies to any smart construction/landscapers). Great app if your in the northern hemisphere. Five stars..Version: 0
Cool! The negative reviews for this app emphasize that lots of people are uncomfortable with science. The only thing this FREE app could use is one sentence instructions telling you to 'put your finger in the middle of the compass and line it's shadow up with the app's shading'. Thanks for the fun app that will amaze children and science refugees, and provide a reminder of our place in the solar system..Version: 0
A compass that perptually points in the same direction.I apologize for the (useless) reviews. The "info" icon has finally responded on my Touch. And, this application can indeed be quite useful..Version: 0
It works but is so simple there's no need for itIt's good if you don't know that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west; otherwise, it's not worth your time..Version: 0
Cool App - Read The Instructions!Hit the "i" button to read the instructions. Basically this app uses your finger to cast a shadow and then lines up N with true North. A really neat app which is getting unfairly blasted because of people who don't read instructions! Works nicely too!.Version: 0
THIS APP IS A SUNDIAL!!!Works good simple yet effective..Version: 0
OkOk intil sun sets after that fail.Version: 0
Awesome appWith this, I can easily go for walks out in the bush, and so long as the sun is out I can find my way home. Shame on the previous reviewer that didn't read the instructions..Version: 0
Great free application, make sure you read the instructionsI like this application. It works well if you read and understand the instructions. Best of all, it's free!.Version: 0
Helped solve argument with wifeWe were in our backyard of our new house arguing over where west was. I downloaded this app, put my finger in the sunlight, and bingo proved where west was!.Version: 0
Basic SurvivalThe most basic electronic version of a compass. This type of compass can be found in all great outdoor survival guides, using a watch. Thanks for sharing this unique and easy to use electronic application..Version: 0
Great app!It uses the time on your iPod iPhone and changes the angle according to where the sun will shine. Great app and it has never caused any problems for me..Version: 0
Not to useableLol, everytime I wanted to use it the clouds decided to hate me. It's a smart idea for an app and probably really useful if you go hiking and need a compass. But wasn't to useful for me..Version: 0
CoolCool but simple. For those who say "I don't know how this works " why don't you read the instructions, go pee your pants. And why don't you use your brain for once?.Version: 0
FAILIt was working great for me... until the sun set and then I got lost..Version: 0
Great simple apWorks great as advertised.Version: 0
