Utterly Broken Bike Share System – A Masterclass in FrustrationI honestly don’t understand how Toronto Bike Share manages to operate this poorly. Every time I actually want to ride, there are zero bikes at the popular stations — while other stations in places nobody rides are completely overflowing. Just today, I docked my bike, walked away for not even two minutes, came back, and of course… it was gone. No bikes left for me. There is absolutely no system in place to balance bike distribution — something that should be incredibly simple to manage. And there’s no button or option in the app to report “no bikes available” so they can send someone to fix it. My rating for this app is literally zero stars. Broken standsThe app is fine but half the time it shows an open spot, that spot is broken and can’t return a bike. Missed several classes because of this, thinking there was a spot available nearby but ended up having to bike another 10 minutes and walk 20 back. By then class was mostly over. Worst app ever?Doesn’t work for single purchase. Even if it did, the UI is a joke and designed poorly (seriously defaulting year at 2007 then saying it doesn’t support people under 18 before I have a chance to move?). Hidden RulesThis app is genuinely trash. It’s like the people who created it think that the average user is low iq. Improvement, but not great.Most importantly, missing the code generation feature. Given how many QR codes and bike numbers are illegible this is super important. GPS seems to lose my location frequently and I need to force close and re-open the app for it to work. Not being able to see dock availability and bike availability at the same time is kind of annoying. I know there’s a toggle but it feels clunky. Not being able to buy a single ride or day pass for a friend seems like a major miss, the argument “have your friend make their own account” will be the reply but for a friend visiting town for a weekend isn’t going to download a new app and make an account, enter credit card details etc just for a ride or two. Took away an important featureThe way electric bikes are shown in the new version makes it very hard to identify if there is a near by one. What the heck is a Channel Gate ErrorSo the app interface was working really good for a while, I liked the user friendliness of it and everything and then magically out of nowhere everyone I would go to unlock a bike (with the $1 unlock plan) it would give me the same error. I tried restarting my device, uninstalling/reinstalling the app, doing it on the web browser instead of the app, and same thing. I even changed methods of payment and made new accounts. Save your money and skip this appThere is ALWAYS some kind of technical issue, either with QR scanning or the app just straight up doesn't work at all. The bike docks are always empty and there are NOT enough bikes in crowded areas - which is literally the whole point. The bikes are heavy and the brakes always make a horrible sound. Unbelievably unreliableMy biggest issue with this app is the misleading information given by the bike station map. It will show that there is one or more bikes available at a certain station, and then you walk to the station and scan the “available” bike. Only then it tells you you that the bike is unavailable. This app is incorrect 75% of the time I try to use it. It’s a wholly unreliable system that you can’t plan for. I feel bad for everyone who’s subscribed to the year long plan. Waste of money considering the bikes rarely work. What I would suggest is having a reason why the bike is unusable. There’s just no bikesI signed up for an annual plan for this service to commute between home, work, and gym and in a week and a half I’ve had 7 or 8 instances where the closes dock to me has no bikes. Sometimes the next closest dock also has no bikes. Before signing up for the service, check your nearest docks. If they consistently have 3 bikes or more then go for it. If the number of bikes hovers between 0-2 don’t bother.
