Garmin Messenger™ App Comments & Reviews

Garmin Messenger™ Positive Reviews

A reasonable insurance PolicyI travel a *lot* and we’re in some pretty crazy times. The cost of a Mini 2 and a monthly service fee seems pretty reasonable. Its initial setup and operation are intuitive to an adult. It’s reassuring to know I won’t be caught without the means to communicate if there is some sort of crisis. The backup navigational capability when away from home is huge to me. Also, as a pilot, it’s worth the cost for emergency backup NAV and COMM. Hopefully it will remain safely at the ready in arms reach in my suitcase, but I take it out periodically to make sure everything is working, I remember how to access the features I need, and to keep the battery charged. Would recommend..Version: 2.1.1

Needs better notifications when you have an unread messageWe’ve been using the app to communicate with a family member who is rafting down the Grand Canyon. It’s generally been good, and I like that it allows for group messaging and some emoji reactions to messages. What’s frustrating though is that the notification options are extremely limited—in the app, the only thing you can set is a sound when messages are received. I’m on an iPhone 13, and I have the settings for the app set to allow notifications, with banners and badges. I’m not the kind of person who carries my phone on me everywhere when I’m at home, and I don’t typically check my personal phone when I’m at work. So I rely on badges to know when I have a message. But frequently, the badges don’t seem to work. I’ll check the app out of curiosity, and find I missed a handful of messages despite there being no badges. So that’s not great..Version: 2.3

Go down to settings. Press the phone Bluetooth button. Then press okay and okay again. Then pair your phones..Version: 1.16.2

Shows potential but not quite there yet…I like the idea but when you have competitors like apple out there offering a complete different experience with messaging, then this app feels like 5 years behind. Even the way the keyboard is displayed in your watch when replaying to a message… it felt like using an old nokia phone. I also don’t like that I can only reply to messages received through the app and not whatsapp or other messaging apps. It limits the user to one messaging platform which is VERY limited in functionality at this time, for example: keyboard display, just messaging and no emojis or ways to react, I was also unable to customize my automatic reply options.Version: v1.19

Very useful app, but could be improvedThe InReach device and accompanying app are excellent in the case of an emergency, to call for help. App could be better designed where I can monitor my sons travels out in the open ocean. For example, receive text or email notices of his movement and locations from time to time. Currently, the inReach and website can show you a map of the person’s locations. However, one has to log into the website map in order to see the person’s location as opposed to… it would be nice having notices sent to me via text or email of his locations along his journey..Version: 1.12.1

Internet requirementsUsing with an inReach Mini 2. Overall, the app is better for sending messages than typing them on the inReach. But the app has a couple basic features that require internet, going against the whole point of having a satelite communicator. Internet is needed to: 1 Choose recipient of free, check in messages. Trying to change the recipient without internet leads to a failure message, citing lack of internet connection. If someone is not pre-set as a check in recipient, you need to send a text message, using your montly, paid allotment. 2 View how many text messages have been sent in a billing cycle. The app communicates with the inReach and should know how many have been sent, but "messages remaining" does not change until you have internet service. In addition, if you go over your message allotment, the app won't tell you how many over (even with internet). It only tells you zero remaining and there is an "additional per message overage".Version: 2.3.3

Linking to FacebookI have just started configuring this device. When attempting to link to Facebook, I had some difficulty because I have Facebook pages which I manage. This app wanted me to pick a page to post to. I didn’t want this app to post to either of those pages and it would not allow me to just post to myself because my Facebook account isn’t a separate page. So I had to go in and create a separate page so that I could pick that from the list. Thought you’d wanna know..Version: 1.15

Activation BugsDuring activation of a 67i device while the app was asking me to enter basic info (name, address, phone numbers) the app either would not display portions of the interface after scrolling or would be unresponsive when editing fields or trying to hit the next button. Proceeded to have issues until letting the app transfer an update to the garmin device. After that, no issues..Version: v1.19

Excellent App!I love the app, and the ability to be able to respond and receive messages on my watch. I would like to see the ability to delete text threads on the watch in a future update. Also, a swipe keyboard to make typing faster on my watch..Version: 2.2

Steep learning curve BUT works reliably, used SOS Feature in real situationThere is much contained within this device. Have used a Colorado since 2010 primary for sailing but added road maps for traveling. The Montana is more like the Colorado user interface compared to the nűvi auto focused and boating chart plotters from Garmin that I also own. So it is important to spend time playing with the Montana interface before needing its features. I purchased the Montana 710 specifically for the inReach satellite functions. We planned a four week travel trailer trip through Newfoundland and Labrador with sparse cellular service. Although our iPhone 15 cellphones do have satellite emergency service, we were not sure if it would be sufficient. We did not expect to need either satellite service, our children were comforted the their 70+ year old parents did have the emergency services. In Labrador about two thirds through our trip, I started choking on a flake of hard candy that hit my soft pallet. While reaching for my water bottle, the vehicle drifted to the soft shoulder at the edge of the dirt road. We slid down the 3 meter embankment coming to a full stop when the trailer’s right front wheel impacted a boulder. My iPhone sent a message via satellite that we were in an accident. I activated the Montana’s SOS button. From that point on, we were in contact with both services. We confirmed that we had no injuries but needed a wrecker to get both the truck and trailer back on the road. The Canadian Mounties were the first to arrive. (Every vehicle that passed us stopped to render any assistance they could. ) IN SUMMARY: Purchasing the Montana 710 was well worth the expense. The iPhone satellite feature also works and will improve. The apparent redundancy of two satellite enabled devices had the added advantage of communicating with family members in ways that they were familiar with. Yes, I am very happy with the Montana 710. When not traveling remote areas, I will have it as my handheld device while on my boat. (I already added the marine charts.) One thing that I would consider if purchasing again would be to include the camera (Montana 760) especially if venturing away from the main roads. The camera is less for snapshots or serious photography, but can give rescue teams visual clues to your whereabouts..Version: 2.3.3

Photos are disappointingOverall the app is okay, but not being able to access photos outside of the app is frustrating. I was hoping I could post a photo from my device and then send that to email addresses. Sadly even the website doesn’t have an api or anything to export photos. The only way to view them is to login. I wish they spent more time fixing this..Version: 2.3.1

Great device!Awesome gear, totally worth the investment if you’re going deep in the backcountry with no service! Great to be able to check in with others and feel safe in the process. Doesn’t hurt to connect with loved ones for a bit. Definitely recommend!.Version: 2.8

Garmin GPS vs Smartphone Location serviceGarmin apps work great overall but it would sure be nice if the Garmin apps could pull GPS location information from compatible Garmin device rather than relying on smartphone’s location services. On multi day trips I have to turn off my phone’s location service to save battery. What’s the point of having two separate GPS systems running simultaneously???.Version: 1.13.1

MessagesMy husband just took this on a weeklong solo backpacking trip. Then happy I can track his movements and he can send pre-programmed messages that he’s OK but those messages are supposed to be unlimited For our package. I can’t find a way to contact customer service..Version: 1.13.1

RobertWhen our son goes hunting two miles high in the Rocky Mountains and freezing temperatures every year, we now have more peace-of-mind, given two way communications plus the coordinates. Four other men along with him Thank you, Garmin Messenger!.Version: 1.15

Mini 2 CheckI’m still figuring it out. So far, everything seems to be working well. When I updated my Check in messages, it tells me to make sure to sync. Not sure what that means!.Version: 1.17.3

Poor support assistReally frustrated. But the device in the app not cheap. But went all in so that I could communicate with my son who is hiking the Appalachian Trail. Have been unable to do so ever since he left I have reached out to Customer Support on four or five separate occasions, and they have not gotten back to me. Pitiful..Version: 2.3.1

Safety FirstFeels good knowing I have contact when I’m deep out there. Tried the cellular services SOS and satellite and they are good but not consistent like the Garmin. Glad to have it as a partner on all my adventures..Version: 2.5.3

Can’t activateI have scoured the app and the inReach messenger device and the words “pair device” do not exist. This should be a priority and I’ve wasted 30 minutes trying to pair this thing. Activating an account should be easy too but those words are only on the device, not on the app….Version: 1.17

Apple Watch capatabilityThis app would be great if there were an Apple Watch widget. I am the black sheep in the family without an Apple Watch. The ability to be able to communicate via wearables would be marvelous..Version: v1.19

Solid PerformancePaired with iPad or phone is so great. Very convenient with larger screen. Been using to pull weather forecasts out in the wild. No emergency usage so far.Version: 2.5
