Garmin Messenger™ Positive Reviews
A reasonable insurance PolicyI travel a *lot* and we’re in some pretty crazy times. The cost of a Mini 2 and a monthly service fee seems pretty reasonable. Its initial setup and operation are intuitive to an adult. It’s reassuring to know I won’t be caught without the means to communicate if there is some sort of crisis. The backup navigational capability when away from home is huge to me. Also, as a pilot, it’s worth the cost for emergency backup NAV and COMM. Hopefully it will remain safely at the ready in arms reach in my suitcase, but I take it out periodically to make sure everything is working, I remember how to access the features I need, and to keep the battery charged. Would recommend..FlyinawaVersion: 2.1.1
Needs better notifications when you have an unread messageWe’ve been using the app to communicate with a family member who is rafting down the Grand Canyon. It’s generally been good, and I like that it allows for group messaging and some emoji reactions to messages. What’s frustrating though is that the notification options are extremely limited—in the app, the only thing you can set is a sound when messages are received. I’m on an iPhone 13, and I have the settings for the app set to allow notifications, with banners and badges. I’m not the kind of person who carries my phone on me everywhere when I’m at home, and I don’t typically check my personal phone when I’m at work. So I rely on badges to know when I have a message. But frequently, the badges don’t seem to work. I’ll check the app out of curiosity, and find I missed a handful of messages despite there being no badges. So that’s not great..Lexipotter7Version: 2.3

Shows potential but not quite there yet…I like the idea but when you have competitors like apple out there offering a complete different experience with messaging, then this app feels like 5 years behind. Even the way the keyboard is displayed in your watch when replaying to a message… it felt like using an old nokia phone. I also don’t like that I can only reply to messages received through the app and not whatsapp or other messaging apps. It limits the user to one messaging platform which is VERY limited in functionality at this time, for example: keyboard display, just messaging and no emojis or ways to react, I was also unable to customize my automatic reply options.DSZ1984Version: v1.19
Very useful app, but could be improvedThe InReach device and accompanying app are excellent in the case of an emergency, to call for help. App could be better designed where I can monitor my sons travels out in the open ocean. For example, receive text or email notices of his movement and locations from time to time.
Currently, the inReach and website can show you a map of the person’s locations. However, one has to log into the website map in order to see the person’s location as opposed to… it would be nice having notices sent to me via text or email of his locations along his journey..Dralph01Version: 1.12.1
Internet requirementsUsing with an inReach Mini 2. Overall, the app is better for sending messages than typing them on the inReach. But the app has a couple basic features that require internet, going against the whole point of having a satelite communicator. Internet is needed to:
1 Choose recipient of free, check in messages. Trying to change the recipient without internet leads to a failure message, citing lack of internet connection. If someone is not pre-set as a check in recipient, you need to send a text message, using your montly, paid allotment.
2 View how many text messages have been sent in a billing cycle. The app communicates with the inReach and should know how many have been sent, but "messages remaining" does not change until you have internet service.
In addition, if you go over your message allotment, the app won't tell you how many over (even with internet). It only tells you zero remaining and there is an "additional per message overage".Nick Name 4523Version: 2.3.3
Linking to FacebookI have just started configuring this device. When attempting to link to Facebook, I had some difficulty because I have Facebook pages which I manage. This app wanted me to pick a page to post to. I didn’t want this app to post to either of those pages and it would not allow me to just post to myself because my Facebook account isn’t a separate page. So I had to go in and create a separate page so that I could pick that from the list. Thought you’d wanna know..HSchuergerVersion: 1.15
Activation BugsDuring activation of a 67i device while the app was asking me to enter basic info (name, address, phone numbers) the app either would not display portions of the interface after scrolling or would be unresponsive when editing fields or trying to hit the next button.
Proceeded to have issues until letting the app transfer an update to the garmin device. After that, no issues..DShaull315Version: v1.19

Steep learning curve BUT works reliably, used SOS Feature in real situationThere is much contained within this device. Have used a Colorado since 2010 primary for sailing but added road maps for traveling. The Montana is more like the Colorado user interface compared to the nűvi auto focused and boating chart plotters from Garmin that I also own.
So it is important to spend time playing with the Montana interface before needing its features.
I purchased the Montana 710 specifically for the inReach satellite functions. We planned a four week travel trailer trip through Newfoundland and Labrador with sparse cellular service. Although our iPhone 15 cellphones do have satellite emergency service, we were not sure if it would be sufficient.
We did not expect to need either satellite service, our children were comforted the their 70+ year old parents did have the emergency services.
In Labrador about two thirds through our trip, I started choking on a flake of hard candy that hit my soft pallet. While reaching for my water bottle, the vehicle drifted to the soft shoulder at the edge of the dirt road. We slid down the 3 meter embankment coming to a full stop when the trailer’s right front wheel impacted a boulder.
My iPhone sent a message via satellite that we were in an accident. I activated the Montana’s SOS button.
From that point on, we were in contact with both services. We confirmed that we had no injuries but needed a wrecker to get both the truck and trailer back on the road.
The Canadian Mounties were the first to arrive. (Every vehicle that passed us stopped to render any assistance they could. )
IN SUMMARY:
Purchasing the Montana 710 was well worth the expense. The iPhone satellite feature also works and will improve.
The apparent redundancy of two satellite enabled devices had the added advantage of communicating with family members in ways that they were familiar with.
Yes, I am very happy with the Montana 710.
When not traveling remote areas, I will have it as my handheld device while on my boat. (I already added the marine charts.)
One thing that I would consider if purchasing again would be to include the camera (Montana 760) especially if venturing away from the main roads. The camera is less for snapshots or serious photography, but can give rescue teams visual clues to your whereabouts..John_PomerVersion: 2.3.3
Photos are disappointingOverall the app is okay, but not being able to access photos outside of the app is frustrating. I was hoping I could post a photo from my device and then send that to email addresses. Sadly even the website doesn’t have an api or anything to export photos. The only way to view them is to login. I wish they spent more time fixing this..The Boaty McBoat FaceVersion: 2.3.1

Garmin GPS vs Smartphone Location serviceGarmin apps work great overall but it would sure be nice if the Garmin apps could pull GPS location information from compatible Garmin device rather than relying on smartphone’s location services. Garmin Messenger™ Negative Reviews
Cannot delete messages on watchFor those who do not know, if you have your Garmin watch linked to your InReach via the Messenger app, you will not be able to delete any messages from your watch. It does not matter if you delete them from your phone, the Explore website, or even the InReach itself, those messages are on your watch for good. It’s lazy design that is unacceptable for a paid subscription service. It’s also very inconvenient!! Anytime I use my InReach, in the back of my mind I’m thinking “well, there went some storage that could be used for maps”. It also makes searching for and responding to current conversations very difficult, because you have to sift through all the garbage you do not want and that you have already deleted off your phone. I know this was a rant, but the current user interface really takes away from any positive experience..ArtamisfowlVersion: v1.19
The app keeps glitching trying to sign inI keep trying to sign in unsuccessfully. I have the correct password and my account is verified. It just won’t accept my password when I am at the screen it takes me to after trying to submit my personal information. It is like signing my out and then asking me to sign back in but denying my correct password. This sort of thing really has me bummed that I purchased a product that I thought made work well right out of the box. I have a newer IPhone and don’t suspect that is the problem, likely the app. If I can’t get it to work I will be returning my purchase for a competing alternative..App doesn’t let you sign inVersion: v1.19
Worst App on the PlanetI made the mistake of installing this junk app because it's required with an Inreach Mini 2. Pairing the Mini 2 device through the app literally took hours. Once paired, I tried to manage my Garmin subscription, but for some reason that option isn’t available - after multiple attempts, all I get is a blank screen on the app. So now you’re trying to tell me that I’m supposed to use this Garmin device and nonfunctional app to contact help when I’m in the wilderness when they don't even work in the comfort of my own home?!? Junk junk junk and a complete waste of time and money. Garmin’s Messenger app is a scam..Ghlatta3Version: 1.18.1
Astonishingly badWow this app has deteriorated horribly. When you go to login, nothing is visible but two text boxes because whoever chose the color scheme clearly didn't actually look at it first. I can't edit the quick text recipients because when you open that page, it's just a white screen. Messages sent from the app are never delivered. I am seriously considering selling my Inreach and cancelling the subscription because what's the point of having it when it's unusable and my iphone can send sattelite messages now anyways?.Havrbe9chbsnakauVersion: 2.4.4
GARBAGE APPMost people use this service for a situation where having mobile phone service is limited which means emergencies and life endangering situations need prompt messaging capabilities. There is a major bug right now preventing use of the messenger app to your contacts. Your only option is to message directly from the device essentially rendering this app worthless.
Garmin has sent out zero communication about this to users and as usual getting any customer support is dismal. I had to go find a cellular service area to try to troubleshoot this issue. Unacceptable.
Hopefully someone’s life isn’t put in danger because of Garmin’s lack of accountability for resolving this MAJOR outage.
Starlink, although a little more expensive, as well as iOS satellite messaging seems to be good enough to justify canceling this service.
I do not recommend you keeping your service with Garmin. Your life could depend on it..SlotswhispererererVersion: 2.8
DangerousDon’t download this app to a secondary device like an iPad. My friend tried to check in from the field and the messages went to an iPad we hardly use and I didn’t see it for nearly a day. Once I downloaded the app to my phone, I could see meaages but could not respond from the app. Also, deleting the app does not restore your texting capability; you need to first “deactivate” your account. This option should be labeled something more accurate like “unlink phone number from Garmin Messenger” because I also have an InReach and I didn’t want to deactivate *that* account..BG_SeaVersion: 1.12
No messages! Waste of good moneyMy family has acquired Garmin satelite mapping services in order to let us know when and where they are. Some in the family have received messages while others have not(we are at the 60:40 mark) while the set-up is reasonably costly, the service is miserably failing. Any in the family have the same setup in their respective phones, in order to clarify any misperceptions. Garmin Customer service is failing, absent! Can’t sign in on AppI just got the Garmin Inreach Mini 2 and am going through the steps to set it up and activate it through the App. I updated the Inreach, paid for the subscription and am trying to connect the device to the App. The App says the device is active and I need to sign in. I go to “Sign in as owner” input my sign in info and it says “Device is already active. Sign in as owner”. It’s just stuck in this loop without any way of proceeding. Unless there is a way through this, it’s just an expensive paperweight.AA56121Version: 2.7.1
App not able to activateFor over two hours the app unsuccessfully tried activating. I’m not sure if it is the app that isn’t working or the inreach messenger device. Another user’s phone app and separate device had no issues activating so I’m not sure what’s wrong on my end.
Update: It finally activated a day or two later on its own but I’m now trying to change the subscription plan and I keep getting the message “Plan change failed” through the app and the subscription portal..Sam8740000000Version: 2.1.1
Setup Is ImpossibleI recently purchased an inReach MINI 2 at REI and attempted to set up Garmin’s Messenger app which is required for the inReach. For some unknown reason, I have been blocked by Cloudflare, the company responsible for Garmin’s online security. There is no way to reach out to Cloudflare for assistance to correct the problem. Judging from other reviews, I am not alone in my frustration. Sorry, Garmin. Your $400 inReach device will be returned to REI tomorrow. BewareThis app requires a subscription, which is fine. I canceled my subscription and received a confirmation. The very next day they sent an invoice for the remaining balance, which is to be expected. But they only sent that one invoice. And then sent the $46 to collections. I must have forgotten to pay the remaining balance but any other company would have sent another payment reminder. Good when it worksThis app is great, but only if it’s paired to an InReach. The process of pairing is very frustrating and time consuming, and after over an hour today I can’t seem to get it paired back up with my InReach. Extremely difficult to useLike so much software these days, Garmin’s suite of software for its satellite comm devices is overly complex. Garmin should be thinking about two things, and greatly simplify the interfaces:
1. Almost all users are casual users. We access the software once every few months, to set it up for a trip.
2. Occasionally the software will be used during a trip. Users are distracted, anxious, under pressure; have no access to a laptop or desktop system; and may have power or communication issues.
Please think a little more seriously about how this stuff looks to someone who is packing for a trip or has already started the trip..Left Coast BillVersion: 1.18.1
Poor device support and lost messagesGarmin supports a weird subset of the inReach devices with this Messenger app — in particular no support for the original inReach mini.
This app also suffers the iMessage problem in that if you’ve used it once it will default to send all text messages there rather than to SMS, even if you’ve since uninstalled the app..Hein.fooVersion: 1.13.1
Really struggles with contactsYour options for syncing contact via the app are either all of them, including ones you don’t want on your inReach, with no ability to remove them on the device, or none being synced and you need to add each one manually. Impossible to suspend accountI love the security the inreach Mini2 provides. I appreciate the route review. But loathe the difficulty in suspending and unsuspending my account. Weather forecasts leave a lot to be desired.I generally use the app and the Garmin messenger for weather forecasts when backcountry camping and canoeing out of cellular signal. I have to say that the WEATHER FORECASTS provided are very RUDIMENTARY as only average wind speed is given, no gusts information whatsoever, and the likelihood (i.e. 40% chance of of rain, snow, thunderstorms etc.) weather events is NOT provided either. Marine forecasts for smaller bodies of water or closer to shore are never available, and no options are provided to select from a list of the nearest marine forecasts available. We are a small company, with many seasonal staff, and assigning an individual email address to each device is a nightmare. You would think this is built with efficiency in mind, but it rather feels like whoever developed this system has never had to use it!

A complete mess of a platform. The stand alone device works well enough so we’ll continue to use them. Only by virtue of having spent ~$15,000 on the units total. Do not recommend. Try Zoleo, Starlink, anything but this..Company purchaserVersion: 1.17.2
Wouldn’t pair with my inreachTried pairing it with my inreach mini and followed troubleshooting recommendations in the app.
No luck. Tried another app, and it paired in seconds. Not sure why this app won’t. Might be the age of the inreach?.FallfactorsVersion: 1.17
Neds CarPlay compatabilityThe idea of being able to use this messaging app from start to finish of a trip on cellular and wifi as well as satellite is great but a lot of these trips for me involve driving including off the grid. If this is going to be the app I tell my contacts to rely on then it also needs to work for me while driving which means it needs to be compatible with carplay just like other messaging apps..Du323Version: 1.16.2
Can’t pairPoor instructions on how to pair. Now in 2nd hour without any luck..CardioChefVersion: 1.16.2

Not working when you need itHorrible, this device needs further testing before you bring it out there, so bad. Garmin in reach messenger.Eric SID 123Version: 1.15
Purposely excluding bran loyal clientsI’ve had my inReach Mini (not Mini 2) for just a few years, and all really Garmin are excluding a model that you can still find in store. Only the Mini 2 is supported in this app..MJQuesnelVersion: 1.13
AnnoyingShouldn’t have to re add all my contacts from the other garmin apps..dddfgVersion: 1.12.1
Does not work for old folksCould not finish setup without changing text size. Good app developers consider larger text size. App developers must hate old people..RusselltoVersion: 1.10
App keep crashing and will send messages via wifi and cellular instead of gps.Why would anyone need a garmin app to do the job a normal text app or watss app would do? If we need to send a message using this app it should be gps message only. Absolute garbage again..AIK02Version: 2.8
